My crankup Winegard dish has to go ! I find the sats ok, but many times my reaching arm gets tired before I find them ! And the crankup dishes only have 1 LNB, and that keeps my dish receiver going to the "check switch" mode, which is a real pain.

Any suggestions as to the best way to go w/ dish TV, other than going to a fully automatic dome, or open dish like the Winegard 1000 ?

Here is the Dish 500 system that is going on top of my MH when I decide to quit setting up a tripod dish. Stay away from the domes, unless you want in-motion TV, as they all use a reduced size dish and that limits your receiving a signal in fringe areas.

I have the DISH 500 as well but use the tripod, I like to be able to move it around if I am stuck in a spot with a lot of trees. I just like to be able to move it if needed..
My 2 cents..
good luck.

Take another LNB and nylon tie or hot glue it to the existing one. Lower it 1/2" from the existing one. Facing the front of the dish put the new LNB on the left. Connect a standard SW21 switch and you have both 110 and 119 sats. Do you have the digital elevation feature ? Beware that that the domes are prone to dew and moisture problems especially on Dish. You may just need some setup practice. I have my manual setup quicker than the semi-auto unit that was in my last MH. Good Luck

We like the flexibility of the antenna on the tripod outside. With 150 feet of coax it is usually able to get clear of trees and obstructions.

The answers are not easy. here are the considerations

Fully automatic IN-Motion a dome is your only option, What I call Semi-automatic (Works only when parked) Stationary I would recommend against a dome, strongly

Domes have a solo LNB it may be a "Single" or a "Dual" (one or two outputs) but there is only one, this means it can see one satellite at a time, OK for Direc Standard Deff. SOME domes can swiftly switch from one sat to another and thus are OK with a DISH 311 or Dish HD receiver. HOWEVER NO dome will work with a dual input receiver like a DVR save on Direc SD service, nor will it work with multiple receivers save on Direc SD service (SD=Standard NTSC defination)

The reason is that Direc needs to see one sat per receiver out of five just now for HD and two of those sats are Ka band, the other 3 are Ku and this means you need multiple LNB's

Dish needs to see one bird per receiver out of 2 or 3, and again there is no way a DOME can do this.

But if you go with a roof mounted automatic dish (What I call a Semi-Auto since they only work when parked) you now have options Motosat http://www.motosat.com makes a full line of roof top dishes

One for Direc SD, one for Dish SD, one for Dish HD and a brand new 5 lnb job for Direc HD, these can feed 2 receivers or a DVR w/o problems I suspect some of them can feed more.

In addition to the roof mount consider hauling about a ground mount (Tripod) as well I mean. I like parking under trees

To do this you need one low-cost switch per receiver input, These switches should be pure switches NOT electronic, NOT remote control, I like sliders but push buttons will work, two position labeled (ideally) A and B

A for Above

B for Below

Then run RG-6 from the switches to a bank of connectors in a storage by or to a bank of through wall feeds (one per input or one per switch)

To use the roof, set to A and turn on the roof top controller

To use ground mount set to "B" and "Stow" the roof top dish or turn off the dome
