I have a Minnkota 45 lb thrust trolling motor. I need a new battery. Looking for one that weighs around 30 lbs or less but would still last a half day's fishing. A friend suggested a Gel ? type. Any suggestions.

No problem finding a smaller battery that weighs 30 lbs or less. Just don't forget your oars. More weight = more power, as all trolling motor batteries are of the lead-acid type.

I would avoid the gel type as they do not store well unless fully charged. You will have other things on your mind when coming in from a long day on the water.

You might try one of the smaller lawn tractor batteries.
It may work for you if you don't use it a lot.
They weigh a lot less than a full sized battery.
The main problem is as I see it that the normal battery is not designed to be used as an RV or Marine battery with constant loads.
They are really only supposed to have one function and that's to start the car or truck they are in.
At that point the alternator takes over for the electrical needs of the vehicle and recharges the battery for the next start.

agm battery
an agm deep cycle battery may work well, pricey, but good. a lawn tractor battery would not last 15 min.

Tractor or motorcycle might work for longer, than 15 minutes, but they have short lifespan. I think for the application Optima AGM are the best.

I've located a 12V 32AH Gel Cell lead acid battery that weighs 31 lbs. Do you think 32AH will provide the power I need to troll around and fish for half a day? I have a 105 AH and it last a week but the reason I don't like it is that it weighs 78 lbs.

it all depends on how much current draw the motor has,and how far you try to go in half a day. I would say try it, the will be also 48 less lbs for the motor to push
