There's no problem with pet food going into Canada, the issue is returning back into the US. From what I can gather, if your pet food is sealed and originated in the US, then it should not be a problem. I suggest that you contact the US border folks and ask them about perscription pet food if you're not sure.

Correction, Canada Border Services Agency can confiscate pet food. I have had the question given to me upon re-entering Canada. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/anima/heasan/import/petse.shtml
The problem occurs most often when things like Avian flu are known to exist. No label says exactly where the protein comes from. Often and often it is poultry protein.
The US regulations say pet food has to be made in the US. I thought this was quite the scream last year, when it was almost all of the US made pet foods that had that phoney wheat protein from China in them. Very few Canadian pet food manufacturers were found to have problems.
The point is either side can confiscate. The regulations are there. So,
a) if you have a prescription diet, carry a copy of the prescription or
b) get your pet on a food you can buy on either side of the border.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

PackerBacker,
They can't ask everything every time!! Can you picture the lineups if they had to do so?
& you know in reason most Border guards are more thorough with those from other countries who are entering a country over those who are returning.

If we do use the Highgate Springs crossing, then do we have to go through Montreal and its traffic? How do you get to Ottawa from there?

After crossing Highgate Springs, it's a combination of multi-lane and rural roads but really no traffic. You will end up on highway 35 and that crossed highway 10 (at Chambly). Take the 10 to Montreal, go over the Champlain Bridge and then follow the signs to Decarie Expressway to route 40 to Ottawa. (this is what I use when towing towards Ottawa).
Alternate; once off the bridge you can follow the signs to Toronto using route 20. You will not see any signs for Ottawa until you are leaving Vaudreuil/Dorion but then you will have a choice; left for the 401 to TO or right for the 417 to Ottawa.

The Champlain Bridge and Boulevard Decarie, take you from the south shore, right through the city of Montreal.
While my son-in-law, who grew up in Montreal and works there now, tells me (like PackerBacker) that it's easy to negotiate, for me it's a PITA with a lot of traffic and sometimes traffic backups.
If you take the Rouses Point (NY) to Cornwall (Ont) route that logcabinKOR and I recommended, the worst holdup you may have is a school bus or farm tractor.
Most of my friends from Vermont (and the rest of new England) take the Rouses Point to Cornwall route to visit Ontario.
Even though fuel is far from cheap in NY State, it's much cheaper than it is in Quebec or Ontario.

On our trip to Alaska we crossing over the border several times, and all crossings were uneventful, except the last crossing when returning to the states. When entering Washington we were asked the usual questions including how much fresh fruit we had on board. I said I didn’t think we had anything except bananas, but the guy from the Department of Agriculture decided to inspect the motorhome. He checked the refrigerator and found two apples, with Washington apple stickers, that I had purchased in Alaska and forgotten about. To make a long story short, I got fined $25 per apple. I suspect the inspector had the apples for lunch.

Back in the seventies I was racing NHRA and went up to Sanair Raceway for 5 days. Upon returning to the US we were asked if we bought anything while we were there. I said no, boarder guard said something to the effect of; five days and you did not buy anything there. I then said well yes I did, I bought this cake on the front seat to snake on while driving. That was it, he had us pull to the side and 2 of guards proceeded to search everything, race car and all. Of course they found nothing but I guess the did not my answer. Not being smart we were up there to race not site see. Other than that all other crossings were uneventfull.

Are the passport requirements in full effect? We left home with ours still in the safe deposit box, along with our birth certificates. oops!!! Any suggestions? Were 2000 miles from home. I suspect our loop back through Canada is going to be a much more "southern" one.
