We have traveled to Canada for the last 42 years. Last time was Aug 07 and have never been asked to recite my license. Is that something new? I'm lucky to remember how to get back home, let alone remember my license number.

They look for it every time. They use scanners or mirrors but with our 5th wheel, they cannot see the truck's licence so they will ask for the number or want to see the registration.

Hi everybody, I previously asked on this forum about your suggestions on traveling from CT to Ottawa. It seems like we'll actually make the trip from Boston, MA to Ottawa. Are there any suggestions regarding the best way to get to Ottawa and which border crossing would be the best? Google tells me to go through New Hampshire, then Vermont and use the St. Armand, QC / Highgate Springs, VT crossing. What do you think? Thank you for your help.

One more question. If we are bringing a gift for a Canadian friend, is that a problem? I mean would we need to declare it and/or pay duty on it?

Our preference is to continue West in Vermont, cross over Rouses Point into New York and cross at Cornwall. We find much less traffic, and very scenic and you will miss most of the Montreal traffic as well and to me that is a huge thing.
As to the gift, I would declare whatever it is, if necessary. ie. if it's booze or cigeretts, all wrapped up, you still need to decare it.  )

I actually used to commute from Hartford, Ct on a weekly basis awhile back while on an assignment. My preference was I89 Highgate Springs to cross; I've done them all.
The St-Armand crossing I only use when camping at Lake Carmi State Park. Although it's an easy crossing, it out of the way and the roads were in terrible shape the last time I was there a couple years ago.

If they ask you if you are traveling with the rig in front of you say yes. Last time we said no and they searched our rig for an hour. Never looking in the obvious places we could hide a gun. Woman messed up all our drawers, I guess she needed her quota and figured the old peo weren't in a hurry.

Breezed through into Canada yesterday. Had all paperwork they could possibly need handy. Answered questions yes/no or to the best of knowledge. No vehicle inspection. No ownership question. No request to see license. Just passports. All very professional & courteous.
Never had a serious problem with Canada or US immigration officials. They all have a not so easy job to do.

I keep reading the posts about the pet food on here. When going into Canada, would they confiscate your pet food and why? What specifically are they looking for? And what if your dog (like mine) is on a prescription food that you would have a very hard time replacing in Canada?
