I know this has most likely been beat to death, but I don't have the time to sit and weed through all the postings about the campground. That being stated, here is my question(s) for you seasoned visitors of this RV resort.
We (the DW, and our 3 boys whoe will be 9, 7, and 4 at the time) are looking at going the 3rd week of October of this year. Any hints, suggestions.
How far in advance do I need to book? Any hints/suggestions to get the "best" site?
Is it busy at DW during this time of the year?
Any other suggestions or advice?
Thanks in advance!

There's no trick to the "best" site as it should be, and all of the sites are quite nice. Disney will put you in a loop that you prefer if possible. Find a campground map online and look it over. Premium sites usually offer better local to transportation and the marina. You can book anytime from now until then as that's not a real crowded time, but it's always better to book early to be safe.
Even though you don't have the time, I'd suggest that you do weed through all the topics on this campground as it will be invaluable information for you.
Here are some sites with some good info. I would book asap. That is the week before Halloween and it starts to get busy.
Call early in the morning. They add yesterday's cancellations the next morn.
Also, if they only have one or two of your days, book them, you can add later.
They have a 5 day cancellation policy so sometimes, the closer you get, the better the chances. Don't give up.
Also you may want to book dining res then also. If your younger ones want Character dining, it books up early.
Dining
Here is a site about dining.
PM me if you would like more info. Gary
Papa's driving the new Daybreak
Jaden and Minnie are CoPiolets
Mickey is navigating
People lighten up. There are thousand of pages on this stuff and to find the exact info your looking for could take hours. So why not ask the question and while your waiting for an answer you could be searching more.
Make your reservations as far in advance as possible. If you want cable you need to reserve a prefered site. Loop 600 which is my personal favorite has such sites and is about midway in the campground. You are also very close to the pool, store and outdoor theatre. Mid October is a great time as the campground and parks are not very crowded. I can tell with the age of your children that you obviously still work and are busy chasing kids. Enjoy!!

The closer you get to Halloween and Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party the busier it gets at the Fort so I'd make your reservations now. Reservations can be made 500 days in advance. As stated, you cannot request a specific site but you can request a loop even though that is not guaranteed. Look at the map and determine if you want to be closer to the action or not. Most likely it will be quieter during the weekdays but Friday evening it can get very busy through the weekend. Cruise over to this forum for all you ever wanted to know or ask about camping at the Fort.
We are going to FW for our first time in June, 2008. It may be a little too close to when you are going to be any good to you, but I will be sure to let you know of tips that I can give you after our trip.

I'd make the reservations now. You only have to give them a deposit of one night's camping fee, and as one who has called twice a day every day for two months to get reservations I can assure you it's easier to cancel a reservation than to get one when the campground is full! I already have my reservations for T'giving 2008 and March 2009.
I don't think there's a "best" site at FW, and they won't guarantee you a particular site in advance anyway. You can request a loop, and you can tell them things you're looking for, though. I suppose you could request a site also, but you may or may not get it. I usually request a loop and tell them I want a site that is easy in/easy out for a 40' rig. I don't try to make too many requests because the easy in/out is most important to me. Others might request proximity to a comfort station or distance from the road. I've stayed in the 1400 loop (preferred), the 200 loop (preferred) and the 1000 loop (full hookups) and found all of them to be quite nice. Some folks like to be near the settlement, others prefer to be near the Meadows pool - to me it doesn't matter all that much because the bus transportation within the campground is good and we always bring bikes. We've stayed more often near the pool, though. Take a look at the campground map to see which loops are where.
Is it busy at DW during this time of the year?
I'm beginning to think there are no "unbusy" times at WDW any more. Disney is doing what they need to do to fill the place up in what were traditionally quiet times. Mickey's Not So Scare Halloween Party is one of those things. It's not going to be busy like it is at Christmas and Easter, but the parks are not going to be empty and neither is the campground.
Any other suggestions or advice?
Your younger kids will probably like the pony rides at the petting zoo. When my youngest was 4-6, she'd rather be there than at the Magic Kingdom! Go figure. We always like to have at least one meal at Trail's End. Their breakfast buffet is good and the price is right, but we've had breakfast, lunch and dinner there and, while it's far from gourmet, kids like the food. If you've never done the Hoop de Doo Revue, make sure you consider it. It's a fun show and good for all ages. If you can take your bikes, you'll most likely get lots of use out of them. And finally, my biggest regret after a trip to FW is always that we didn't spend enough time in the campground.
Majsantara, we made reservations for Oct about 2 weeks ago and with a AAA discount the price was $42 and change per night(a savings of about $10). While you can probably make your reservations a little later than at this time, the chances of getting something like a AAA discount diminish the longer you wait. You're right these questions are beat to death, but there are those Disney addicts like myself that really enjoy answering them, so keep asking! Have a great time, we're going the second week of Oct.
bsshelby brings up a good point that I would like to expand on, that is the AAA discount. Many folks overlook the discounts you can receive being a AAA member. Just this week I received 30% off my glasses at Lens Crafters, that amounted to $199.49. For that kind of savings I would have gotten a AAA membership just for that and still I'd have come out $140 ahead.
Back on topic. Some folks like to book Disney online but by doing that you can't check for available discounts. Instead call 407-W-Disney to make reservations. Don't forget to ask if a AAA discount is available (15% off during value season and 10% off the other seasons). If no discount is available, make your reservation anyway to secure your dates and call back once or twice a week to see if a discount is available that you can apply to your reservation. Your credit card will be credited.
