Anyone hauled their camper to Ocracoke Island, NC? We're considering heading down there this spring & wondering what the campground on the island are like. I know there's a state park there. Are there any amenities at the campground like electric, water? Is it out in the open where you'll be sandblasted all day? Just curious if it's advisable to camp on the Outer Banks & just take day trips over to Ocracoke. Any inputs are appreciated!

Thanks.

We rode down last summer and looked around. Pretty much going to be in the sun. Personally, I would look at a day trip to the island. But, that is just MHO.

The trip from Hatteras to Ocracoke is free, and the Island is pretty small and doesn't have a lot of camper space. The Outer Banks is a beautiful place from beginning to end, but there isn't much shade.I've stayed at the National Seashore many times, and when it gets windy, there is a lot of sand movement, a small barrier is a good idea if you put out the gen set, both for noise and sand.

For us the important thing is to pick the right time to go. Spring is nice before it gets too hot and the mosquitos come out. Fall can be pleasant also. The national campground on Ocracoke doesn't have hookups but there is water available and primitive cold showers. Carry plenty of things to keep you occupied, like good books and fishing equipment.

Below is a picture we took at the National Seashore campground on Ocracoke last May. We spent 3 days there and really enjoyed it. The site we were in was just a short walk over the dune from the beach.

We stayed at Cape Hatteras RV Park near Wave, NC and took the free ferry to Ocracoke in our tow vehicle. Photos here.

There are only three campgrounds on Ocracoke.

The National Park Service Campground is the only one just behind the dunes to the ocean. No water or electricity on their sites; mostly tent camping.

The two "in town" have more services but are not on the water.

Everything at Ocracoke is geared toward beach and fishing. There are a few stores and restaurants, grocery stores, and fishing boat/sea kayak rentals. Few activities to occupy older kids/teenagers; if that is important to you.
