This may have been asked before but I could not find it. We are planning to take a long trip this summer 24 hours or more driving, we are planning to stop at rest stops to sleep on our way to our final spot. My question is can I run the genny while we sleep is it safe to do so? This is so we could have the air running and stuff.

thanks

Sure as long as your exhaust system is in good shape and you have a CO2 detector functional. We do it often.

I'd say that's what there designed for....If you have any doubts, crack a couple windows and maybe a roof vent for air flow.

Some folks run them for their AC's while driving.

I'm sure you'll find someone to advise against sleeping within earshot of any internal combustion engine, but sleeping with a properly installed RV genny is commonly done and generally regarded as safe. The precautions I follow are to be sure no window or vent is open, certainly not on the side where the exhaust is located, and be sure your carbon monoxide alarm is working properly.
Be a good neighbor, don't run it where the noise will offend anyone. If you're among trucks with idling engines and reefer engines, you'll blend right in.
Remember that generator fuel tank pickups require the tank to be at least 1/4 to 1/3 full, so refuel before you stop if the tank is low.

To be on the safe side, I would install two CO detectors. It would be very difficult to test the detector with actual CO to make sure it's working properly and pressing the "test" button only tells you that the speaker is working, not that the detector will actually detect CO and sound the alarm.

A genturi wouldn't be a bad idea. That link shows my homemade one that needs some tweaking but you can also purchase them (Camping World & other RV places) for $120 and up. You should probably close any roof vents because my wife has stated that she could smell the exhaust.

The Genturi is a very neighborly device to use when running your genny near other people. It gets your exhaust gases up and away from people and from other RV's which might have windows or vents open. It also reduces your exhaust noise near the ground, and in my coach at least, the perceived noise level indoors. However, your safety when running it really depends on tightly closing all windows and vents that could pick up the exhaust gases. Especially with a Genturi installed, that includes roof vents.
