I have had my Fords and my Chevy's. I had a 97 Ford Ranger I bought new. I liked the Ranger and the 2.3L Ford engine over the S-10 2.2L engine. When it comes to full size I prefer Chevy's because I have always had small block Chevy's and always been easier to modify and more availability for parts. Also Chevy has usually one up'd Ford on engines. If Ford got them Chevy would answer back the next year. But what I like about Ford is the interior. They have had better interiors for a while.

If I could have a custom truck built I would get a Cummins engine with the Allison tranny and Ford interior and Chevy body. I do like the Duramax though but the Cummins has a longer track record and better economy until this last change in motors.

Is it me or was the post asking about bed size and not engines? I have a short bed and have no problems. However, I think a long bed is the better choice.

For me, I have the long bed Crew Cab Ford. Why - it was available when there was a 6 month waiting list for Diesel pickups. At the present time I would not own a short bed. When we are not camping we use the truck for hauling stuff to the dump (we live in the country and have 2 acres), picking up stuff at the lumber yard - I can close the gate with a 4 X 8 sheet of plywood, etc. We have used it to move stuff from Colorado to Maryland when my parents sold their house. I find the 8 foot bed to be very useful when I'm not towing, as well as not having to worry about the "crimp" factor.

Just my 2 pennies

One good point about a long bed is that you get extra exercise in parking lots because you usually end up parking on the outer portions of the lots where there's room (just kidding) They are a challenge when you go to any commercial business unless you're at a truck stop. You need to plan your moves before you get into a jam.

They all have their advantages. I have a co-worker with an 07 diesel and he had trouble with a turbo right and has been o.k. since. Fords still scare me the way they ended up in the law suit with Navistar over who was paying for the repairs etc. I don't know if that has been settled but when two heavies like that have their lawyers go at it you have to know that something is wrong somewhere. The 7.3 ford was a solid engine, too bad it had to be dropped to meet EPA standards. I have no concerns with the Cummins engines other than the noise their earlier models made. I do not care for the Dodge bodies and looks.

I'm still stuck on the Duramax. The motor's been in production since 2001 with minor enhancements through the years. The 6 speed allison Tranny behind the Duramax is bulletproof. As I suggested in my first post, at least try one and compare.

thanks again!

our purchase price is set because we have the x-plan employer purchase deal with a good discount. so that won't be an issue but it also won't be a negotiating option either.

This is certainly a huge reason why you are purchasing the Ford instead of one of the "others". It gives you a big financial advantage and should be able to put up with a few more problems then if you had to buy like everyone else.

We have an 04 6.0 350 CC 4x4 Long Bed Dually Lariat and the order I would give up would be the Dually, then the Crew Cab, then the Diesel, then the 4x4. There is absolutely no way I would give up the Long Bed. If I did I would just get a mini van and throw the seats out then.

I had already replied to the bed size earlier. I was simply responding to the post previous to mine. I guess it takes an Okie to pint that out. Just Kidding. I lived there in Moore for 6 years and I will be back in 2 more years.

Tazzy, I'm in the Marina business and have had nothing but long box's since 1984. I now have an 06-350 SB CC SRW Diesel. Love it and will not be going back to the longer box. Having said that, I just want to also say that it sure seems that we see alot more Fords pulling and pushing most of the heavy stuff around.

good points, all.

we just had a trailer custom made to tow stuff - building materials and such - from Lowe's, etc. It's 18 feet long and we had the ramp reinforced to be able to handle our John Deere tractor. So there's always that for buying the long sheets of plywood, lumber, etc, from the store. that's why we're even able to consider the short bed. it wouldn't affect our ability (okay, husband's ability) to buy material for home projects.

I tow with a crew cab short bed because that is what I prefer.
~
I've had a crew cab long bed and didn't want another.
~
But - . . . . -YOU- should order whichever -YOU- prefer!
~
NOT what I, or anyone else prefers!

thanks, bombero. we would prefer a short bed simply for the ease of use but if a long bed is necessary for using a fifth wheel, we'd get that instead. that's why we're trying to find out what everyone else uses for their fifth wheel.
