Need some advice on campspots. We have some friends who we found out are headed to Oregon in June. We think the dates will work for us also. They already have reservations at the KOA and we tried online last night but couldn't book anything. The DW is going to try to call today to see if there is anything available but if not we are going to try to look elsewhere.

We looked at Spinreel and Horsfall as our other options to still be in the area and allow for rides and get togethers. Specifically which campground do any of you recommend and if you don't mind telling which spots you have stayed in.

Thanks for the help.

The Mill Casino in Coos Bay has a big new RV area with hookups.

Call the KOA and talk to them. They can put you on a waiting list, and usually, you have a pretty good chance. We go every year in July, great place!!

If you don't mind dry camping, the MyrtleWood Factory next door has turned their parking lot into a dry camping RV park. It's not nice by any means, its a parking lot, but its a 2 min quad ride to KOA so you can ride easily with your friends.

yes, call KOA they know all the spots around, they can lead you to one close by. Coos bay is a fun spot. we were there last year and had a good time. Just don't ask me where we stayed, I barely remember being at Coos Bay. old age syndrome.

If you're looking for full hook-up and sand access KOA right now is the only option. The County is building a park near KOA, but no one really knows when it will be ready for sand access.

The Mill is nice, but you're going to still have to tow to the day use area for riding. If you're willing to dry camp then Horsfall, Spinreel or MyrtleWood Factory all have direct sand access. Another option to consider would be sand camping too. Coos Bay is somewhat limited with full hook-up and sand access.

On a side note, KOA is very strict on the rules. Speed Limit and quite hours are inforced. They will also charge visitors $5.00 a day.

I'm curious what your dates are for June as we have a group going up and will be camping at Horsfall Campground. We camp often at the KOA. At times (when they are full) they have put us into their overflow, then moved us into a site if one became available. I'm pretty sure they will not "reserve" you a spot in the overflow...mainly for folks who just arrive and will take whatever might be available.
Myrtlewood is the closest campground to the KOA...very short ride to the KOA and a short ride out to the dunes. No hookups, camping on asphalt, no showers, no dump. Some of the sites down in the back corner are fairly large.
Riley Ranch (new campground) as far as I know, still not firmly committed with an opening date (it was supposed to have been open last summer) but there has been some talk that it will be open in July for Sandfest 2008.
Horsfall...pay showers, camping on asphalt, no dump. The sites here can be a little narrow and many of us reserve two sites per rig when camping here. Good dune access.
Spinreel....no showers, no dump. Good dune access. It can be a little tight manuvering in this campground...not uncommon to reserve two sites per rig depending on the number of toys.
Horsfall Beach....no showers, no dump. Good access to ride the beach or dunes/trails. This campground is great if you like to be at the beach. I prefer the campsites on the perimeter.

Here's an update concerning Riley Ranch. The gravel overflow area is now open. They expect some sites that will have water and electric (no sewer) to be open the end of March. Cost for sites with hookups $30. Reservations will be through Coos Co. Parks. They do plan to have a dump station there eventually but there is none at this time. Now here's the downside...they do not expect the dune access to be open until summer 2009. At this point folks with toys will need to utilize one of the day use areas. I got this information this morning when I spoke with Tammy at Coos Co. Parks.

Thanks for the info on Riley Ranch. Right now, we're planning on being there June 14 thru June 18. Some friends are staying at the KOA, but we may end up at Horsfall. I like the dune access there.

We have stayed at the Myrtlewood factory once. It is what it is a parking lot, the store is kinda neat. If your not afraid of pull into the sand you can drive directly there on the same road the ATVS use from Myrtlewood.
