OK:

Called my brother - he had the 05 hemi qc with 3.73's. Its problem was tranny shift points in hills. It shifted really bad not staying in a low or high gear.

He couldn't stand it.

The 2009's are supposed to have 30 more HP (375). I have a 2007 and the MDS kicks out at 65 MPH and so does the 2008. With the new 2009's the MDS is supposed to be good up to 75 MPH.

I've owned four Cummins powered Rams. Was very happy with all of them. Now we tow the same 5th wheel with a Hemi powered duplicate of the '03 Cummins Ram. At 77k trouble free miles, I have no regrets. The Hemi Ram tows our 5th wheel every bit as fast as the '03 Cummins did but one gear down for 30~% higher rpm and about 30% more fuel consumption. The Cummins Rams all gave 18.5~mpg light city, 19mpg 70mph highway and 10.5mpg towing 68~mph. The Hemi gives 14~mpg same light city, 17~mpg 70mph highway and 8.5~mpg towing the same 5th wheel over the same routes 68~mph. I set the cruise just like I did with the Cummins Rams and let it do what it does best. If you're the kind of person who bursts into tears over a downshift to let the engine run in it's powerband on the steeper uphills God forbid, you won't be happy. If you don't mind hearing an engine towing 2600~rpm on the flats to mild rolling interstate hills and 4200~rpm on the steeper ones as it's been built and designed to do, you might be as happy with it as I've been with mine. My Cummins powered Ram towing the same 5th wheel towed in O/D (angels singing) and had to downshift to direct to run 2900rpm on the same steeper uphills the Hemi runs 4200rpm on. If mine were any where near as bad as some here would lead you to believe, I would have already traded it for my 5th Cummins powered Ram. A co-worker friend has over 140k on his '03 Hemi powered 2500 with the heater core being the only trouble he's had with it. Do your homework and make your own decisions. It's paid off for me with many miles of happy trouble free and issue free driving. I use 89 octane in mine towing or empty. We have plenty of power around the southeast. Folks in Denver would call the Blue Ridge Mountains hills. A NA engine loses about 3% of it's power for every 1k feet of elevation. If we we lived or planned to travel around the Rockies, I'd want another Cummins TD powered Ram or, as Glenn stated, a lighter than 8k lb trailer with the Hemi powered Ram.

I knew you would find this thread Hannibal.

Nice to hear a voice of reason from a real Hemi owner.

Hannibal, you've convinced me. We're going to order the 2008 with the Cummins. This will be our third Cummins and yes they are sweet.

We plan on a 2 month trip through the Rockies this summer and the Cummins should get us through with flying colors. It sure has through the mountains in pennsylvania- Vermont & New Hampshire.

Want to thank everyone for their input. I really do appreciate this RV.Net group of people.

Happy trails,

I don't come out until after dark!

Bill, I think you'll be very happy with your decision. Anxious for the towing report now!

Going on 3 years towing with my 03 HEMI powered Ram.

For two years we towed a small light weight travel trailer under 5000#'s loaded and we averaged 11-12 MPG.

In 07 we upgraded to a toy hauler under 7000#'s loaded and been averaging between 9 & 10 MPG.

Unloaded mixed city/highway 15 MPG.

All this was done with a 3.55 axle ratio, which isn't good for towing, but helped highway MPG.

Recently upgraded from 3.55 to 4.10 gears to help with the heaver toy hauler, however I haven't had a chance to tow. When we make the 3 hour trip to Glamis next month I'll know if the 4.10 gears helped or hurt our MPG.
