Had the same problem with the dirt getting in...took a good quality household air filter, cut it to fit the opening and put it over the intake area...now I just change the filter every couple of months and the batts stay clean...
We have had two coaches, an '01 Discovery and an '04 Discovery where the wet cell batteries are wide open to the elements and it was never a problem. I washed them off when washing the coach, and once in a while, maybe twice a year, I cleaned them with baking soda. Our Revolution, with four 12 volt AGM's for the house, and two maintenance free for the chassis, are fully enclosed and always very clean and trouble free. Especially with wet cell batteries, having them open, at least for washing and spillage is important.
