There are plenty of roads from Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast and California that will take you to Highway 5 which runs thru Sacramento where Highway 50 starts.
299 close to Eureka will take you to Redding, a beautiful drive.
If you go farther south on 101 you can drive the Avenue of the Giants thru the Redwoods. Lots of State Parks in the Redwoods.
Then take highway 20 from Ukiah over to Highway 5.
Stay on 5 until you reach Highway 50 by Sacramento and you are on your way.

Yes, there are several routes. You could go down 101 to Reedsport, Ore cut across to I-5 south to Medford, go east on 140 to Klamath Falls, south to Reno and then catch 50. You can also stay on 1-5 to Mount Shasta City, CA and then go east to Reno, You could also go from Medford east on 62 and visit Crater Lake National Park and then go south on 97 to Klamath Falls to Reno. All are good routes. We have traveled 50 many times and always enjoy it. Send me a PM if you need additonal info.

When we travel south on 101, we cut over to I-5 on Hwy 20 through Clearlake. Hwy 20 is a good road but a bit slow around the lake. Then you could pick up 50 in Sacramento. The interchange in Sacramento will turn your hair grey so I'd look for an alternate at that point. The drive down the coast is well worth the effort. Happy travels!!

I'm doing essentially the same plan as DandieDinmont. I'm staying with my daughter in Bonney Lake, WA now and have never been in OR, so want to see the coast on my way to Moab. All this info is very helpful. Thanks!

ditto for us, except we plan on going from Moab to Lake Tahoe via Hwy 50, next to Crater Lake, then up the Oregon coast on our way home. Last time up the OR coast was tent camping about 20 years ago

I believe that October is half price month in the Oregon state parks. It should be a great time to drive thru there. They have some of the nicest state parks in the country.

Looks like we may crossing paths with some of you, we have to head up to Seattle in late September for Mariner games, haven't decided if we'll leave from Seattle to Moab via Yellowstone and Grand Tetons or whether we'll come back home, reprovision and then head Southeast to Moab. Enjoy your trip through Oregon and don't forget 2/3s of the state is East of the Cascades!

This may not belong here except for the reference to the Oregon coast (simply gorgeous). I've just returned from my first real trip in my PW which I bought last August. Phoenix to Lake Powell, Zion, Bryce, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone including Bear Tooth Pass, Glacier National Park, Northern Cascades Highway, up to Coquitlam in BC, the Olympic Peninsula, and then down the coast on Hwy 1 to Los Angeles and over to Phoenix. Had some hiccups along the way...had to replace the water pump and the refrigerator, buy a new tire in Bellingham, endure water tank leaks, and then my dash A/C went out the day I left LA so had to wait until dusk to set off across the desert! Finally I had a major tire blowout around 10 p.m. near Blythe, zig zagging all over the road (OK,I probably shouldn't have put my foot on the brake but I'm a rookie and panic took over!), leaving me facing in the wrong direction. The fact that nothing was coming behind me at the moment is simply by the grace of God and I'm grateful to be here to tell the tale. What a fabulous trip though...it put almost 6,300 miles on my Pleasure Way and (almost)every single one of them is a treasured memory.

Thank you for the suggestion of renting a cabin since I didn't get my B yet. Because of the cost of the cabin, I'll only be able to stay 2 days and one night. For those not sightseeing around Moab on Sat. and Sun. I'll be asking a lot of questions about your Bs. I look forward to meeting all of you and for all your information.

cat7 how nice that you'll be able to do some brain picking, you'll find the B'ers some of the nicest people around. Everyone is always anxious to give tours as well as advice. I'm sure you'll learn alot.
