k9eros - you have some awesome toys there. Did you build the '69 yourself? Is it a pro touring theme?

Well I don’t consider ours a “Big Rig” like some of your guys (I must say some of which truly are impressive and we admire online and in person at campgrounds frequently!!) We recently purchased our 2007 Cayman with the Cummins 5.9 ISB 325 HP low torque motor at the end of last summer replacing a piece of junk 2006 Coachmen Mirada 310DS with a Ford V10. With the Cayman being so new (and quite frankly I don’t really want to know how poor the mileage is) I simply do/have not calculated it! From what others are saying with equivalent size, weight, and motor seem to be estimating 8–10 MPG range, though I honestly do not think we are getting that, we have only approx 5,000 miles on her.

That being said I know the enjoyment is FAR greater and worth the price for purchase, maintenance, and fuel over our old gasser!! I don’t believe (Correction I know) we are not a part of the “money is no object” crowd but we are happy with our decision to upgrade to a diesel and as fuel goes up we adjust accordingly with shorter but not less trips, maybe not as many dinners out, etc.

It seems to me like I read in this forum that the bigger the engine, the better fuel mileage you would get. And the reason was stated that it was because the engine would pull the weight with more ease.
It didn't make sense to me because I have always found out that the more displacement on an engine, it just require more fuel to run it.
That is when I posted that manufacturers apply engines on coaches according to weight. The more weight, the bigger the engine it require to pull that weight satisfactorily. Most of the DD engines that I have driven have all gotten anywhere 5.5 to 6 mpg. All Cummins use from 6 to 9 and Cats are about the same as Cummins depending on the size of the engine.
But after reading all these posts so far, it seems like most of your big diesel engines are not going to get much better then 6.5 mpg. Which makes a lot of sense because of the weight ratio.

Ours is an 04 C7 Cat pushing 28000 and pulling 3200 pounds. We get 7.5-8.5 with the coach. (and 16+ as a 'fleet' average).
Another factor to consider is the age of the engine. In the Cat line, there were environmental mods made in 04 and 07-each costing some mileage. The best mileage from what I've heard is probably 2000 or earlier, all else being equal.

We just completed a trip to Disney World and went down through Alabama so we avoided the mountains. We got from the mid 6s to the lower 7s pulling our small trailer with the golf cart in it, doing about 65mph. There is just over 10,000 miles on the coach when we got home. But, on the return trip we stopped at a Pilot Travel center to fuel up and they had blended 15% biodiesel. We got over 8mpg on that tank!
