My 1998 Coleman Grandview had a dinette slide and it was the best.
A couple extra steps setting up/down but never any issues like a water leak.

There's an old saying about how you can tell when a salesman is lying...His lips are moving.
As for leaking slideouts since they started adding them to PU's the only ones we found that did leak were either not maintained or the owners didn't follow the simple directions for opening and closing.

Pray tell -- what of the glide out dinette is supposed to leak? The tenting on the glide out portion is the same as the bunk ends...
My 06 Niagara has the glide out dinette, and no issues with leaks.
I do believe your sales person was snowing you to get you to look at what they wanted you to buy!

Thanks folks, you've convinced us ! Its the Starcraft for us. Out of interest, how are trailer tents in cold weather ? The one we are looking to buy has got a furnace but we are planning a 6 month trip round BC starting in mid-April so its going to be a bit chilly at first.

Vicki, PUP's with slideouts are just as water tight as the bunkends as the top of the slide out is attached in the same manner. Now I will admit that there is the potential for little more air to enter the PUP. On mine the sections between the box and the slideout has snaps and Velcro which might leave a gap. However, there are a lot of other areas where air enters the PUP so this is not an issue.
Setting up is very easy. After pulling out the bunkend, you release the slide out catches and pull it out. Finally, from the inside you stretch the top just as you would do the bunkends.
Regarding furnaces, yes get one and you should up grade the thermostat to a digital one... a very simple modification. In addition, I would recommend carrying a portable electric heater/electric blanket if you are going to have shore power, or a propane heater if you are boondocking.
Hope this helps.

Have an 07 Niagara what we've already hauled all over on eight trips. Several long distance. It's been towed in heavy rains. No leaks. It's been set up in torential downpours. No leaks.
I'd agree with he others. This dealer has another agenda, and it isn't a PUP with a slide-out.
Buy what you want, and enjoy it!

I put the reflectix under the bunkends and got the pop up gizmos on the 2409, My wife has bought a heated matress pad to put down but we have not tried this yet. Last year we went early in mid January with just the furnace and a ceramic heater and it was not too bad at all, my wife was still a little chilly at night.

So let me guess - the idea of a slide leaking on a PU came from the salesman selling brand "X" that didn't have a single PU model with a slide out at the show. He figured maybe he'd put you off to the idea of a slide and get you into one without?
That's the same type of salesman that would tell you a Ultralight camper is junk if all he had was a luxury 5th wheel at the show.
As Mike said - the only way to tell if a salesman is lying is if you see their lips moving. They are below a used car salesman, because at least the auto industry has laws about deceptive sales tactics. The RV business is a slicked back dark industry when it comes to consumer protection laws. What other business can operate by selling defective products to the public where the consumer ends up having to BEG for warranty work?
Anyway's, off my soap box. Get the Starcraft, probably one or the best assembled PU on the market today.

You asked about the PUP in chilly weather. It's pretty good. I added Sunbeam electric heated mattress pads to mine for very comfortable sleeping on the bunks (also have memory foam toppers). You can adjust the temperature to fit each of your needs, and there's no extra weight on top of you .. feels good on the back too!
The furnace works great, but, you also consume a great amount of propane (a 20 lb tank might last you 28 hrs depending upon usage). The fan on the furnace is a little loud, but you can easily get used to it.
I use the furnace to get the PUP to a comfortable temperature, then kick the thermostat back and use an oscellating electric heater to maintain the temperature. Works great!
Another thing that helps in both hot and cold weather are the 'Popup Gizmos' (insulateed blankets for the bunk ends and glide out dinette). Shiny side up in summer to reflect the suns heat, shiny side down in cool weather to retain the heat in the PUP.
