Also have a good sense of direction and don’t get lost, can navigate by the stars, etc.

So there we were in a strange town going to a restaurant at night having checked out the map.

Turned on Callie the GPS and off we went. First I noticed that DW wasn’t trying to follow on the map in the dark car so that we’d know when the streets were approaching. In fact we were having a casual conservation with friends in the car. Second I never needed to look for a street name in the dark, just followed Callie. Panic set in as we approached the restaurant – where was it? Arriving at destination on right cooed Callie. Pretty cool.

After we got home having taken a wrong turn that Callie calmly corrected I asked her about some other towns we’ve been in with no map. She replied that she had all of the town maps and roads in the US and Canada. Very impressive.

Maps have their usage but so does a GPS. That’s my message and I approve it as the Beltway folks like to say…

Kind of makes you wonder how ANYBODY ever goes anywhere without em eh? I don't use them, not because I'm against em or anything like that but I get to see so many places that I'd NEVER see if I wasn't lost. You don't REALLY know any area until you've seen it from both directions (by turning around to correct an error)

Yep, DW still likes her maps but we've both found that "Maggie", our GPS unit, has become a very trusted friend on our trips. This especially holds true when driving in a strange town at night.

If I don't get lost I'd never have any adventures. The last time we went to Fla we ended up way out in the everglades-by accident. Also found a small unused beach. But I'm thinking of getting one anyhow.

I'm another one that still trusts maps more than my GPS. Maybe because the GPS we have been trying to use is one that DW bought where she works when it went on the clearence shelf (as I told her "because no-one else would buy them either!") BTW, it's a Sony - not known for GPS.
Anyway I just bought a Garmin c530 on eBay, and can't wait for it to arrive. Have (hopefully) done my research correctly. Couldn't seem to find any serious negatives for this unit.
I'm still not going to throw away my maps though. And like Skip said you find some of the nicest places when you make a wrong turn.

I have a GPS (Garmin 350) also, but I always look at maps first so I have a general idea of where I am going. Last year we went to Colorado with a planned stop at the Great Sand Dunes. Even though we had been there several times, I put it in the GPS anyway. Well, the GPS tried to get us to turn off on an unpaved road and go in the back way over the mountains. That would have been a big mistake. Year before last, again on our annual trip to Colorado, we took an alternate route thru La Veta. GPS (this time Streets & Trips on computer) told us to go to a certain street and turn left. That street ended at a low water crossing that you would have needed a 4x4 jeep to get across. The real turn was 2 blocks earlier. So, moral of the story is know in advance where you are going.

GPS is wonderful technology, but it is still possible to get lost due to the POI database being inaccurate. On several occasions we have had to stop to ask for directions when the GPS led us to a spot that was miles from where we wanted to go.

I'm with you Bob. I always joked to my GPS owning friends that I did fine with maps, and that somehow a GPS was a baby's toy. I'm a map junkie as it is, so when a friend begged me to try his GPS, I did so to appease him. It turned out to be pretty cool. While I won't rely entirely on a GPS, its a great tool that enhances using maps and planning trips.
