Hello, I also have a new pup and it got Giardia (sp) which is a parasite. Which gave her diareha and also some blood in the stool. The other one I would be worried about is Parvo. Is she lathargic? I would take her straight to the vet, as it is probably not something she ate. Keep us posted and good luck.

I'd agree with everyone here. It's time to see the vet! My rule of thumb is if it doesn't clear up in a few hours (enough time to pass thru its system), it's not just simply stomach upset.
I wouldn't rule out food allergy as well. Incidentally, about 15 mos ago, my dog got real sick in the middle of the night, vomit & diarrhea and all that, we had to rush him to the emerg vet. We'd never got a definite diagnosis: acute allergy/poisoning. At the time, he was about 2 weeks in the newly switched Calif Natural Lamb & Rice. Before that, it was Chicken of the same brand. One possible causes was a built-up of allergy to lamb after a while. After he was nursed back to health on prescribed Medi-cal gastro formula, he was on Innova (chicken/turkey) ever since. It may worth a try to look into his food.

Try feeding her a little canned pumpkin, it can help stop the diarrhea. Since it's sweet, most dogs will eat it.

How is the puppy doing? Mine has been at the vet hospital since Wed. at 3am.
Woke up at 2am vomiting profusely for an hour..had acted fine up till that point. He is just a year old.
They are doing all the tests, so far negative, luckily. Hopefully he will come home today, and might never know what bothered him!

Thanks CBSnob about the tip re: topical ointments. Although he is not a big licker, he might have gotten enough if I had some on.

Sunshine state..let us know when you get back from the vets.

Good morning and thanks for all your comments and concern.

I will be dropping off a stool sample at the vet's this a.m. and they will test it. They said Lucy might not need to go in for an exam since she just had her six month check up three weeks ago. We'll wait and see what the testing shows. However, if there is any question or doubt about what's wrong, I'll still take her in later today to be examined.

Last night she had two episodes of diarrhea, this time about 9:00 p.m. and then again about 3:00 a.m. It was still very loose, but the amount was less. I'll let you know what I find out. Judith

We have a 7 month old golden retriever who was having the same issue. Fine during the day, acting normal, but every hour during the night she'd get the runs. Checked her stool(with vet)no parasites. He suggested changing her food but we wanted to wait since first, we just bought a 20 lb. bag and second, wanted to make sure it wasn't something that would pass on it's own. This started around the holidays so we too thought possibly someone snuck something as a treat to her but no. So we first withheld all food for 24 hrs.to give her system a "rest"-then for about 3 days just boiled chicken and rice-then mixed 50% rice and 50% her regular food for a couple more days- then 25% rice and 75% regular food for couple more days- then just her regular food. Unfortunatly for us as soon as she went back to 100% of her food the runs came back so we opted to change her food(gradually- 50/50-75/25-then 100% new)and so far so good. The food she WAS on was the same stuff she had been on since birth, so evidently their systems/tolerances can change. By the way the canned pumpkin works wonders to firm up the stool-just make sure it's 100% pure pumpkin and NOT the pie mix-also heard green beans do the same(it's the fiber in them). Good luck!! keep us posted P.S. our girl is named Lucy too!

Whenever our guys get sick, we stop food for 24 hours then go with boiled hamburger and rice with a little pumpkin thrown in. I hope you get your little guy's problem under control because there is nothing worse than a sick dog.

Lucy's stool sample results were negative for parasites, worms, infection, etc. etc. So all is well there. I have narrowed it down to about three possibilities (1) licking too much hand lotion off grandma's hands and/or (2) licking the dishwasher when it's open while I'm loading the dinner dishes and/or (3) too many treats (dog biscuits) grandma was feeding her quite a few I discovered. Anyway, I've given her pumpkin and will hope tonight brings more improvement. She is doing great other than the loose stool and is very happy with all you nice people who were concerned and shared your thoughts.
]Thanks for all your help, Lucy
