After driving a bit in CA, I have concluded that the cops will not bother trucks who drive 65, where it is posted 65, even though the truck limit is 55. But if the trucker should go 66, he gets a ticket for 16 over the 55 limit.

In other words, trucks get to go the same speeds as the cars, which makes sense, but they had better not go even a little bit faster, which also makes sense.

It is a much better condition than in some places, NB, CO, WY where I have dodged trucks that are running 80 or more.

We just travelled down I5 thru CA ,also was wondering about the speed pulling our fiver,1st time,it says ,all autos towing ,55mph.MOST trucks we followed, ran 55-60.We thought this is crazy, but by the time we reached oregon,we realized if you travelled much faster on there roads you would wreck your fiver, real glad when we hit OREGAN.

3 axle speed limit (55 mph) does not apply to 3 axle buses or motorhomes. Only commercial trucks and when towing. Of course all the standard restrictions like school buses, some haz-mat loads, explosives, etc.

If you're driving a motorhome and not towing, then either the 65 or 70 mph speed limit applies. Anything towing, including a motorcycle towing one of those spifrfy little trailers, speed limit is 55.

I would like to agree with you but the speed signs in CA say 3 axles or more is truck speed, doesn't say "except buses and MHs". I haven't driven enough in CA to observed the speed of 3 axle buses so I don't know. Perhaps some CA residents with tag axle MHs can help.

I think I would tend to believe the post from Doug, he is retired CHP.

Chuck,

I spent 33 years on the CHP, retired in 2003. Unless the law has changed it is K previously stated.

I take I-5 several times a year towing my TT down south from the Bay Area. I've consistently set my cruise control at between 60-62 mph on I-5. I stay in the right lane except to pass.

I don't get to pass too many trucks. They are the ones doing most of the passing. I've had CHP cruisers come onto the freeway behind me and just pass me by at my consistent speed.

I'll keep doing 60-62 mph in the slow lane--it seems to be a nice pace for me. No matter what I do, I always seem to average 50 mph on a trip, regardless of location or miles traveled. Rest stops, gas fill-ups, traffic, etc. make my average trip speed 50 mph.

Since I have always had a toad in tow I haven't tested 70mph. I agree with the previous poster about truck speeds in CA and I like to drive their speed because it means less lane changing and passing. My speedo says the 60+ noted by the previous poster, but my engine ECU says 58mph and that agrees with several radar speed monitors I have passed so I suspect it is more accurate than my speedo. Of course every once in a while some hot dogger pulling an empty flat bed trailer blows by me at 70.

In CA we run 60 to 62. We don't pass many trucks and a few pass us, never been bothered by the LEO's if blending with the truck traffic.
