Hello All
My wife and I have been out on 2 trips now in our new 2008 Jayco Kodiak 32SS with the 8.1 chevy engine. We have stoped to fuel up on both trips. Both times after I fill the gas tank the rig will not start. It does not crank over, it does not even click, turn the key and nothing.
After 20 minutes or so it will start as if nothing happened. Both times I thought I was going to have to call for a tow. I do not get it. Very frustrating. Does anybody have any ideas? I will take it in to have it checked but I want to give as much info as I can so I do not get the old "we could not find anything wrong. Thanks for your help. Jack

The Thermos keeps hot things hot and cold things cold. How does it know?

With it cranking fine cold, almost sounds like something wrong with the solenoid or starter

If you drive the way you did when you stopped to fuel, and just sit for the amount of time it takes to fuel (but don't fuel and don't remove the gas cap), is the outcome any different?
Sounds to me like "heat soak" where there's less cooling on the hot engine right after shutdown than there is actually running. Soaking into a relay or such, but these new engines are so sophisticated the ECM could be checking for certain inputs before it even lets you crank.
There've been threads about a sensor on 8.1s, I think it was crankshaft position, but not sure and to me the thing would crank but not start. Try our search facility and see what it generates.

We have the 8.1 in a GMC 3500 DRW, luckily have NOT had your problem, BUT when you find the problem please post it so others that might have this happen will have some insite.

My feet are fine as long as they are traveling.

Thanks for the replys. I don't think it is heat soak or anything like that. We have stopped and restarted many times and it always starts perfect. It seems to be with fueling. I have pulled the gas cap off without refueling to see what would happen and it started fine.
The 2 times it would not start it acts like it would if you tried to start it in gear...turn the key and nothing... Jack

Jack does the security light on instrument cluster blink when it fails to start? It sounds like you may have an intermittent issue with that or a heat soak issue. With a passlock problem the computer thinks someone is trying to steal it and goes into a tamper mode that usuall is about 15 minutes. The GM trucks had a diode in the ignition switch passlock circuit that fails quite often causing intermittent issues. I am not certain but I would bet the Kodiaks use the same setup

Are you doing anything differently between actual fueling and not fueling, like removing the keys, setting the brake, opening a compartment...?

Could be that the starter motor or solinoid it self is getting hot on the long drive and has to cool before it will start. How is it insulated from the exhaust manifold/pipe? Is there any heat shields between the starter and the manifold? Are you sure you are in PARK? Just a couple of thoughts. Let us know what you find out.
