I have a 1995 Itasca C Class motorhome on a Ford E-350 chasis. We bought the unit a year ago and the cruise control worked very breifly. Since then, it hasn't worked at all. I checked the fuse but it is fine. Are there any other simple and inexpensive things I can do to try and fix the cruise control without having to take it to a ford dealer and have them repair it for me? I don't know if there is some sort of electronic "box" that can be tested or replaced, or if I should take off the steering wheel cover and make sure the cruise control buttons are correctly engaging. Any advice would be appreciated...thanks!

Well one thing you can do is check and see if the thing is under the recall for faulty part on the master cylinder, it escapes me the name of it. It connects to the Master cylinder and the pressure of the brakes bening tapped or applied disengages the CC. Look at it and see if it is leaking brake fluid aroud it. Bad news is that if it is this part there is a long waiting list to get one because Ford has been out of stock.

I will remember the part name and edit my post if I do.

EDIT: It may or may not affect your application... "Ford found that brake fluid coul leak through the cruise deactivation switch into the cruise system's electrical components and cause corrosion. Corrosion can cause a short and keep the cruise control from working, but in some cases it can lead to a higher flow of current that can overheat and cause a fire at the switch."

I am not sure the Ford recall goes back to 1995, but it worth doing a search on "Ford Cruise Control recall"
If the recall does not go back that far, most cruise controls, when activated, will shut off when you press the brake pedal. That function is controlled by the "Brake Light Switch". So it stands to reason that if the brake light switch is not adjusted right, it could also keep the Cruise control from going ON. SO check the operation of the brake light switch located on the arm of the brake pedal itself. Just a thought.

Jeff,

There are often other interlocks that prevent the cruise control from engaging. One mentioned above is the status of your brake lights. Parking brake activation (or at least thinking it is) will sometimes disengage. Sometimes not being in Drive will disengage the cruise, or having the flashers on.

Some Fords have an indicator on the instrument panel showing that the cruise is on and engaged. If you have a manual, see if you have that feature, which will help you to decipher your problem.

I'd put my money on a problem with your brake lights, though.

Check your vacuum supply this is an easy check and without adequate vacuum most cruise control units will not work at all.

The 95's are under recall, though the 'fix' from ford is installing a fuse in the wire. My cruise control didn't work before, and doesn't work now either. What I did accidentally discover is that the cruise control in my E350 does work 100% of the time with the headlights OFF (and doesn't work 100% of the time with the lights on).
