Hello All. We will be in the Cherokee NC area at the beginning of June and we want to stay at a campground (either state park or RV park) while we are there.

We're travelling in our 26' Class C RV and we'll be pulling a trailer with our two maxi-scooters. We'll be joining a group of other scooter enthusiasts to do sight-seeing rides via the Blue Ridge Parkway etc.

The other scooterists are staying at a motel in Cherokee NC. Since the "after the ride" activities will be centered at that location, we want to camp close enough to enjoy the fellowship of others, and also have a place whereby we can enjoy the camping experience for a few extra days after this get-together.

We prefer at least an electric hook-up (full hook-ups are nice too) and ideally would like to camp on a scenic site on the water. We will need dump station access before we head back home.

We are only two adults (no children or pets) and prefer not to stay in a family oriented park where there's lots of noise and activities geared towards families with children (we do enough of that back home). This is our chance to relax and enjoy ourselves for a few days.

For those who know the Cherokee NC area well through camping there yourselves, what can you recommend to us.

FYI - I have searched Cherokee NC and have viewed the various links. However, we find the best suggetions come from people who have "been there, done that".

With our gratitude in advance. ~ bugjr ~

Maybe I can help in an off handed way. Based on what you post as your preferences, I can definitely recommend that you NOT stay in the Cherokee KOA.

We found it to be very cramped, noisy, and over-priced. It was packed with zillions of kids roaring around on rented 3 wheeler cycles.

Might be a good choice for some but wasn't a good experience for us and it sounds like it wouldn't be for you.
Have a great trip.

Thanks downtheroad. You're right, this is not the experience we are looking for. ~ bugjr ~

It doesn't have hookups, but Smokemont is a clean federal campground only a few miles from Cherokee. It has a river running through it and plenty of trails for hiking. Also, horseback riding is available. Not a bad place at all--just no utilities.

We have been camping in Cherokee for 20 years at Yogi In The Smokys.
I have several pics of the campground on my profile page.I can help you with sites also.
One the road that leads to yogi is where the BRP starts in Cherokee.
Very easy access the parkway.

It can't get any better than this!

Here is a link to a VERY nice CG near Cherokee. The sites are huge and it is very quiet park.

I've only stayed at the KOA, but we always camp with friends that have kids so it works for us. I almost made a reservation at Yogi in the Smokeys though. The Cherokee KOA is way on the pricey side and Yogi was about half the price! JMO

We second Timberlake at Whittier just outside of Cherokee. The park has been there since the 60's run by a delightful lady and her daughter. The campground was established so long ago they didn't know you were suppose to be packed in like sardines. There is a lake, water, electric and a dump station. If you need to dump before you leave you can request a trip from the "honey wagon" and they will come to your site for a small fee.It is down in a valley so little to no tv and not much cell service but hey you are there to get away from it all!
