I recommend Creekwood Farm. They are located conveniently just off Exit 20 at I40. It is a 30 minute ride into Cherokee.
This campground caters to the mature campers (there is no playground, no pool).
Some sites are on the river side and you can relax in your chair as you hear the leaves fall and the water trickle over the rocks.

Thanks one and all ... this is exactly the type of information we were looking for. You're all terrific.

One quick question, I understand Smokemont does niot have hook-ups ... but does it have a dumping station?

For the time after your group activities.....go to Deep Creek Cmpgrd in Bryson City. Try for a site on the creek. Sites are narrow but it is a pleasant place to stay with FULL hookups. Also a 5 min drive to GSMNP entry. The town has some restaurants, grocery, small shops, etc.

Full name: Deep Creek Tube Center and Cmpgrd

This post is a little late but I thought I'd let you know how things turned out. We decided to try Holiday Cove Campground instead of Smokemount. We did not make a reservation as we were told there would be no problem fitting us in.

Usually this is true. However, the weekend we went down to Cherokee NC (June 20-22nd), the campground was hosting its annual Bluegrass Festival and it was booked solid. They did say they could find us a spot ... only if we sprung for an $80 per person ticket to the weekend's festivities. Since we went down to ride "Tail Of The Dragon", we said no.

There was one older lady at the desk who did recommend against a few CG's on our list but did recommend one we should try. It was the Flaming Arrow ... just outside of Cherokee. Overall, I rate it a B+. It had full hookups, was reasonably priced (about $37 per night -- with site premium) and also had a nice, clean and large pool to cool down in after a full day of motorscootering on the "The Dragon".

Very nice, friendly and helpful owners. (we had a problem with our tranny and they were ready to jump in if needed). Lots of families with kids at this place ... especially on the weekend but since there is a lot of room for them to run around and swings etc., it was OK. They even hosted a movie night on the Saturday night for the kids which kept them occupied and quiet.

There is one RV site they call "The Eagles Nest" ... it overlooks their CG and also has a terrific veiw of the Smoky Mountains. We were lucky to get that one and loved it. Just overlooking everything from your own perch while having a quiet morning coffee was worth the site premium.

We'd recommend the Flaming Arrow to others. ~ bugjr ~
