Warm enough for comfort depends on your comfort level. Probably cool to cold for someone from a warmer climate but nice time to travel up there. Fewer people and fewer mosquitoes. Some RV parks won't be open but you should not have a problem finding a place to stay. They may not have the water or sewer open in some parks but power should be available.
The front guard is up to you. I have been that route, down and back many times and never used one. Last two trips came down in late April, early May. Have fun and enjoy the trip.

cal...how many miles did you put on during your trip? We plan on leaving May 1st from Florida and may head to Tucson then up the Alaska from there. Ed

I know you asked the question of cal, but we did 8,000 miles crossing and returning to Washington at Sumas. We did lots of roads but neither Dalton nor Dempster. Not many others we missed.

While my GPS shows the mileage from south Florida, Stuart, to Fairbanks and return to be about 9,500 miles, we never get close to that figure. On our last two trips, 2004 and 2006, our 10th and 11th round trips to/from Alaska by RV, we put 13,871 miles and 16,369 miles respectively. Most of my previous trips I can't find my trip notes. Moved too many times in the last 45 years since my first driving trip to Alaska. LOL
Somewhere in the 14s would be about normal, most trips. However the 2006 trip we went by way of Boston to Montana and then north, The 2004 trip, we took the ferry from Skagway south to Bellingham saving some miles on the truck.
I left the San Francisco area May 29-07 and boarded the ferry in Port Angeles to Victoria, drove to Port Hardy and boarded the ferry to Prince Rupert. To make a long story short ; drove to Fairbanks and Arctic Circle. Return trip to Calgary, Alberta. From Calgary got on I-10, hooked up to I-80 and came home.
No bugs to consider a bother. If you venture into the bush; well that is another story. The repellant works as advertised. Great!!
I drove a Ford full size sedan ( Crown Victoria ) Some people call them cop cars. I camped with a tent, Camp sites absolutely no problem. It rained in Edmonton for three nights. The day time was just fine. The roads in the Yukon Territory where a little dusty for a few miles. I washed the car about six times. I just like a clean vehicle. The car has XM Satellite Radio. Leaving TOK 6-17-07 from Tundra Lodge ( Don and Mary's camp grounds) to Dawson City, via (The Ridge Road) Top of the World Highway,; at the border crossing into the Yukon , the Canadian Immigration Officer while looking at my passport, was curious how I was able to receive Fox News Channel with Bill O'Rielly so easily in this remote area. XM worked 95% of the trip. The angle for satellite radio is somewhat acute above Fairbanks
but worked sporadically.
Have fun on your trip and drive accordingly to the road conditions. Don't be in a tithy about getting to the next camp site. Relax and have your favourite beverage at the end of the day.
14310 miles and 27 days later I was home. It was a quick trip but I was by myself and I got lonesome for home. After leaving Fort McCloud, Alberta and showing my passport at the custom officer , I drove straight through to Wendover, Nevada for a little shut eye, shave and shower. North - South - East - West - Summer - Winter - spring - or Fall.
Some one will love the weather, and some will hate it. We will leave Dawson CR. about 14 May 08 headed for Alaska, and intendend to enjoy it regardless. We have spent several days at a time around Seward when it rained day and night, ejoy it? Sure did.
Not to be morbid, but, each day that passes we are one day closer to
not being here, so I love it rain or shine.
