We are beginning to plan our summer trip, and inland Maine looks like an attractive destination. We love wildlife spotting, so I think this is a good choice. I do not have a 4WD vehicle, so how is access within the park? Reading their website leads me to believe that a 4WD vehicle is necessary to travel the roads. Also, does anyone have suggestions for full hookup parks in the vicinity? I have a 35 foot motorhome so I need something that can handle something that size.

Thanks.

The best choice for a FHU park close by is in Medway to Millinocket region. The roads around the area and in the park do not require 4X4 but are dirt and gravel. Also some of the roads require a fee to travel on, but the scenery and wildlife make it worth the small fee($5 last time we were there). We stayed at Katadin Shadows CG and were very pleased with the CG, plus it is an easy drive to the park.

Baxter State Park and surrounding area is easy to get around with a 2wd. Understand that outside the park is millions of acres of privately owned timberland that is open to public use. Some areas you do pay a fee, $5 per person per day. It you are looking for wildlife you will not need to go to the areas that you need to pay. You can either stay in the Millinocket area or the Greenville area (Lilly Bay SP is beautiful)and take a ride in between. I suggest you stop at wal-mart and pick up a Delorme Gazetter Maine road atlas, this will have most private roads mapped out. If you drive on the private roads (gravel) keep in mind that all Log trucks have right of way. Some of these trucks are 12 foot wide and are loaded with wood twice as high as the top of the cabs. When you encounter one pull over and let them pass, they do not slow down. During dry times the dust is blinding and the trucks move fast and they will kick up rocks that will break windshields, also make sure you have a good spare tire, flat tires a very common...I know from experience. The best time to see wildlife is during dawn and dusk. Follow some common sense rules and you will have a great time and see beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Thanks, Mark. That is exactly the information I was looking for. The logging trucks are something I never thought about.
