Last December we went down 27 and back up the turnpike.

If we go again and it is during the day, I would go 27 as it is a little shorter and slower but a lot better scenery. At night or just to make time, the turnpike is faster but boring.

Have fun whatever you decide.

In '92 (a week before Andrew!!) we drove down the Gulf of Mexico route to the Keys. Very scenic. You can stop off at lots of towns along the way & they ALL have public beaches & showers. Stop for a little sun, rinse off, & be on your way!! Also you go through the Everglades. You will also be able to see alligators in the drainage ditches on the sides of the road. Anytime you see a car stopped at the side of the road & people looking out, you can bet there's an alligator there! You can throw them marshmallows and they will gobble them up. The kids loves that. (BTW, I learned this from some native Floridians on that trip!)

I went to the Florida Highway Department Web site and it computed for me pulling my 5th wheel to be $49.00 each way! We're taking Hwy 27....

Feeding wild alligators is illegal and dangerous, as aligators associate humans with food.

I don't know about the month of June but the no-see-ums drove us out of Bahia Honda State Park in the Keys,(mile marker 38) on Feb 9th. We had a waterfront site and was booked for two weeks but had to leave after seven days. The ranger said they are not allowed to spray in park. The park and beaches there are just beautiful also a snorkel boat will take you out for some reef snorkeling. To survive the no-see-ums I suggest that if you don't have no-see-um proof screens on your rig either get them or close it up at night and turn on the AC. Also if you plan to sit out for a sunset do it in a breeze or from a no-see-um proof screen shelter. During the day stay out of the shade and grass and bushes etc. Bug spray doesn't work. Dryer sheets don't work and other than wearing long pants shoes and socks they will get you. My bites quit itching after 3 days and the marks faded. My wife's didn't quit itching for a week and she still has the marks. We did spend a few nights in Key West with no problems. Mallory Square, Duvall Street. Lots of great Cuban Food and Mojitos. We also did a wine a cheese sunset cruise out of Key West through Danger Charters. Enjoy your trip! Also if you want to see dolphins up close Check out the Dolphin research center MM 59.

Sounds like some mean critters, thanks for the heads up on what doesnt work. Do they mostly come out in the morning or evenings or just anytime?
Thanks for all the info.

If you are in no hurry, take the west coast route and cross the Glades on 41 (Tamiami Trail) to 997 down to US 1. Much more interesting ride

Took this coming back from the keys on a motorcycle. Liked the cougar crossing signs. Much nicer than Aligator Ally.
