we just came back from ocotillo wells near cahuilla and commune. place was crowded! pulling out today, we were amazed at all the trash that was left by people. i know that most of the people that post here care about their desert, but it was sad. i was taught "haul it in, haul it out". it's no wonder that our riding land is being taken away! i had my kids go out from camp in a 50 yard radius and they came back with a full trash bag (had to bribe them with a dairy queen stop). anyway's, thanks for letting me vent!

The same people go to Yosemite and leave a dirty baby diaper at the side of a trail, they also carve their initials an a 1000 year old Sequoia in Kings National Forest, and paint their tag on a rock in the Grand Canyon. Teach your kids to do the right thing so that their kids will thank us all!

Just recently someone posted complaining about the U.S. Forest Service closing trails to ATVs. I hope they read you post.
There probably are a lot of responsible people out there like yourselves, but there are a few who ruin it for all.
Along with freedom, comes respect and responsibility.

I have never understood how people can throw trash out and not seem to care. These will be the same people that complain when riding areas are shut down. It seems like people have no respect for the land, other people or even themselves. I can't understand how people think it is cheaper to travel up a dry wash for miles to dump a stove, garbage etc rather than going to a local dump, even if they have to pay a small fee to dump. If you are out enjoying the desert and you pack it in you can pack it out, including cigarette butts. It is disgusting how people think it is perfectly acceptable to throw there cigarette butts out the window or out on the sidewalks, garbage is garbage.

we were camping on the side of the road on the snake river near Huntington Oregon a few years ago. We picked up six, that's right six black bags of trash just in front of our two campers. from our front doors to the water, which was about 15 ft, we picked up that much trash. we hauled it to a state park close by and put it in the trash were it belonged. we got permission first by the way.

Thanks for being part of the solution. I also pick up other people's trash at campsites--including cigarette butts. I wear a plastic bag over my hand as a 'glove'.

Thanks to You and the kids for caring,
We have a couple of those trash grabber thingies, the kids always patrol the area and pick up a bunch of trash, next trip I will bribe them with something, (Note to self, bring along some ice cream)
I do love those "Blizzards" from DQ.
Last trip to Spangler Hills I picked at least 2-3 lbs of nails/screws from a pallet bonfire.

Unfortunately the problem is not confined to the USA. The worst examples I see in Australia is when people "do their business" in a roadside rest or free camping area and don't even bother to dig a cathole. Old toilet paper laying around everywhere. It makes me sick as I can't understand how these people think. I bet they don't do it in their own yard!
