I worked in Alaska for two summers and a group of friends in three cars took a trip to Kennicott for a weekend. All three cars got flat tires, two cars got two each. Every vehicle we saw had flats (including huge machines to work on road)......what a pain. Even with all trouble the trip was worth it as it is such a beautiful place. The inn there is expensive, but includes all food (delicious!!). You park in McCarthy tote everything across a bridge (no POV beyond bridge) where vans pick you up for the rest of the trip. I was a tour guide in Alaska those two summers and this trip is in my top 5 must do in Alaska.

What year was this? The number of flats is not consistent with other posting ?????

Please give me enough troubles, uncertainty, problems, obstacles and STRESS so that I do not become arrogant, proud, and smug in my own abilities, and enough blessings and good times that I realize that someone else is in charge of my life.

We chose not to take our TC but instead took the one day van tour.

Anyone know the name of the van tour? And where to make reservations?

As you can see, some folks drove the road on a good day, some drove it on a bad day. Our last time the road had not been graded recently and there had been rain. It was very washboardy and we were very glad that we had not taken an RV. Washboards can be really nasty and very hard on your rig.

It is a very easy day trip with good camping at the Copper River, and that would be my recommendation. Turning around with your trailer could be a pita if you don't like the road.

This sounds like another good truck camper road. Can anyone compare this road to the Dempster or South Canol Rd. in Yukon?

Thanks for all the replies to my question. I did find a website on the vans and found the cost from Chitina was almost $100 each round trip to McCarthy. There are 4 of us. The suggestion to stay at the BLM campground and drive to TV in sounds like the way to go for me.

I haven't been on that road in years, but I understand it can be very hit and miss. I can't imagine that it has really been "upgraded" but it does get graded from time to time.

I wouldn't take the TT unless you don't mind severely shortening it's useful life. That road CAN be about the worst road you will ever travel. Not only RR spikes but huge timbers can jut out at odd angles and do real havoc if you aren't paying attention. I shudder to think what the washboard factor would do to a TT.

If the road is bad and you are pulling the TT, plan on going under 15mph, more like 10 is probable.

I was there in 2004 when we had all the flats. Word from the locals is it happens most when the road has been grated thus bring up old rail spikes. It was a total washboard also. I'd do it all over again, however because it was just beautiful.
