They sometimes spend so much time sniffing, I wonder if they are doing a chemical analysis to determine the breed of the dog that occupied that spot previously.

So true! After a long drive from Minnesota to the Oregon coast, we stopped at an empty dog park that we came across, to let the dogs run (in Bandon OR) . You would think they would have been running in circles after a 30 hour ride in the RV. Nope... they were more interested in slowly walking the perimeter of the park and sniffing.
