Okay, before I get the "it's too dangerous for your Kids" or "they will get hurt"....
it is, and they will, but that is what makes riding so appealing. my dad bought my first dirt bike when i was in 6th grade. i've broken a few bones, but my dad still supported my riding. i didn't have time for drugs or gangs growing up, i had to keep my bike up to speed and myself healthy. from my experience, this will be one of the best choices you will make for your kids. good luck with whatever quad you choose!

I ride an atv and my son rides the dirtbike. Wish I had learned to ride a bike at an earlier age.
Your never to old. I am turning 40 this year and bought my first bike last season. Sold my quad shortly after
I would prefer my whole family rode 2 wheels but I wont force it on any of them. If they want 2 they will get one if not then they can keep their quad.

I did not consider a dirt bike. Being that I have 2 boys that will be riding this summer. Maybe I will get one quad and later pick up a dirt bike and they can share each.
Thanks for all the tips!

I tried riding my son's XR 250 when we first got it for him. Lot of loose sand/gravel in the area we were riding and those squirrely riding conditions just did me in. ALL I could think about was going down. I had NO fun on it at all. Intellectually I knew I should just twist the right hand and grab more throttle but couldn't do it. I get on my quad and all those fears go away and I have fun. But I'm always jealous of him. Bikes are cheaper, take up less space, can go in areas I can't, handle the whoops so much better and are faster down the trail.
Ultimately I think dirtbikes are safer. I've gone riding in a fairly technical trails with my buddies who ride dirtbikes. Big steep hills, steep off-camber or a combination of the two; If a dirtbike gets in trouble, they can just lay it down. If a quad gets in trouble , it can get ugly and expensive fast.
