THE WEEKENDERS wrote: That is insane, 2 to 3 miles over the speed limit and getting a ticket. No leeway there. I have a good friend who is a Chief Deputy Sheriff who says he always exercises a bit of leeway. The fines are really bad news there
This is exactly what tells me the area was having a big problem with speeders and brought in the Calvary for a period of strict enforcement. I know when this happened in our jurisdiction, the orders were 1 MPH is OK, 2 MPH is a citation.

I know exactly what you mean Caflyfisher. There is only one reason for speed limit variances like those that are posted in such a short span and that is revenue. I will not be traveling to Benson either.
Shame on your drunken friend. My sister was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 21 in 1982. I still miss her.

A speed trap city is one that tickets you for exceeding the 25 MPH speed limit when you are doing 20! Or they might have a 15 MPH speed limit!
Getting arrested for drunk driving is probably great enforcement on their part. By the time the guy was given his blood test, my guess is his blood alcohol level had gone down a bit over the time it took to get processed.
I don't understand why so many speed limit signs are within such a small area. But I know that those city streets are skinny, only the highway feeder streets are fairly wide.
Whatever you do, make sure you don't exceed 15 MPH near the schools around Las Vegas. The fine is $100 per MPH that you exceed 15 MPH. So doing 45 on a fairly large 4 lane street, and then it goes past a school, the fine can be $3,000! Yes there is adequate signs, but one time I saw 4 cars pulled over at one end of a school zone. They can also ticket you for not wearing a seatbelt to. I saw officers walking down the Las Vegas strip pulling over cars caught in rush hour nighttime traffic.
Some statistic's I have seen is about 20% of people pulled over for no seat belt go to jail on one town. 20% more get two tickets - one for the seat belt and another for something more serious. Not because they where unfairly targeted, but because most of the people pulled over where let go with a stern warning (except for 60% of them), but those with unpaid tickets, warrants, and such where hauled in for that reason, and cars without insurance are impounded, drivers without a licence have their car impounded for 30 days in Long Beach CA. The Long Beach fine can be $2,400 for storage at the City Police Impound yard, then an additional $105 towing fee.
So if you see a 25 MPH speed limit, it is OK to drive 20, and if the local residents don't like it, they can vote in a Mayor that will change the speed limits to a reasonable level. Sometimes because of traffic conditions, the speed must be reduced for intercity sections of traffic. Sometimes because it is close to a school crossing or fire station, or crosswalks.

wow $450.00 is pretty steep for a couple over. I guess they want you to think twice ( or maybe 450 times) about breaking the speed limit. The DWI is pretty touchy everywhere if you blow over the limit you can expect to go to jail. What else can they do. If they let you go and you have an accident they lose their job.

well the little bird says they are looking for illegals and drug runners and maybe worse people. they are protecting you and enforcing our laws. they do it on i40 outside of flagstaff where i live and they have had some big busts. sure they cut it close to the law but to simply say they are speed traps is naive. good job southern az police, be safe.

Sounds like a selective enforcement approach to address problems with speeders and DUI in the area. Posted speed limits and levels of alcohol content while operating a vehicle are established to ensure public safety. My disappointment is that the high fines only serve as a deterrent AFTER the fact. But late is better than never. If all the offenders elect to avoid the area, the locals will rest a little easier when they send loved ones off to work and their kids off to school.
Slow down. Don't drink and drive. What is it that people don't understand about that?
And no, I don't sit on the right hand, for I have sinned. I paid the exorbitant speeding fine 35 yrs ago. Ever since, I pay attention.
1 or 2 mph tickets? some of you actually casting stones when others complain about tickets being handed out for 1 or 2 over...are you kidding me? i would wager a fair amount that those of you making silly statements like "obey the laws" and you wont have to worry about tickets couldnt make it through a day of driving without violating at least a couple of traffic laws. further you probably couldnt make it through the day without exceeding the posted speed limit by 1 or 2 mph. no person can rely on their speedo to tell them their actual speed. do you realize that your actual speed vs the speedometer reading will vary 2% just from tire wear from new to bald. 2% at 70 mph is 1.4 mph. now take into effect tire pressure, maybe your tires have been replaced and the new ones are a different manufacturer with a different number of revolutions per mile, maybe you have a load in the back of your truck which compresses the tire and creates a smaller effective rolling diameter...your speedo will get you close and that is it!
if you are one of those people that routinely drives 5+ mph under the speed limit...no matter how much traffic there is...the preceding rant does not apply to you...that discussion is better left for another day.
bottom line...any law enforcement organization that hands out speeding tickets for 1 or 2 over is corrupt...and greedy.
