It's time again to start looking for a new TV. Current TT is a 27' Dutchman, weighs 6000lbs loaded and ready to camp. I've towed it before with 5.7l Durango's (plenty of power, some sway problems) and 4.7l Dakota's (power ok, no other problems) all that had trailer tow packages on them. Setup is the simple friction bar and WD.
Question is - was considering a Tahoe/Yukon this time. Looking for something a few years old w/ lower mileage and that would have 3 rows of seats. I don't want to start a Dodge vs GM war, but any thoughts or preferences?

I'd go for the longer, wider, heavier Yukon, preferrably an XL.

There was a discussion about the tahoe a couple months ago that you should search for as there was some good input on the tahoe. As I recall, the concerns raised pertained to wheel base (??) and it's impact on managing sway for longer TTs (??). I somewhat remember this because I own a 2004 Tahoe (love the third row) and tow a 27ft Jayco that is probably 5000-5500 when loaded. In my expereince, the Tahoe handles just fine (I don't know the TT is there). BUT, I just bought the TT last summer (we're newbies to RV and TOWING) and I have yet to take it on the highway (55-60mph max and no 18-wheel encounters). Hence, I say take a look at the other threads/opinions. If there is any truth to this, you may want to look at the Yukon XLs or Suburbans. I believe tahoe ratings are slightly heavier compared to my Tahoe's 7500 lbs rating.

I'd be looking at the Tahoe / Yukon XL for the longer wheelbase & 3rd row seats. I don't know if GM made a Yukon Denali XL but that would get you the 6.0 engine & 4L80E transmission.

Just an FYI Tahoe/Yukon doesn't offer 3rd row seat unless you go with Suburban/Yukon XL.
Here is a towing info for those vehicles
2005 Tahoe
2005 Suburban 1500 and 2500
2005 Dodge Durango
2001 E450 Fourwinds Majestic 26
2004 Dodge Durango Limited Hemi 4x4 LO
2005 18' Haulmark enclosed trailer

The Durango is the same length as the Tahoe (within an inch or so), has a LONGER wheelbase (119" vs 116"), not sure if the Tahoe is heavier, but it is definitely wider.
As others have said, I think the best would be the longer WB Suburban XL or Yukon XL with the 6.0 or 8.1. Towing 6000 lbs in a 5.3 Burb wouldn't be the best, IMHO.
If you're contemplating ONLY between the Durango (newer style '04 or newer) or the Tahoe, I'd probably go with the Durango with the 5.7 HEMI and 3.92 gear. You will have more oomph than the 5.3 in the Tahoe.
Regarding some possible sway issues with either 'short' WB Tahoe or Durango, I'd think about biting the bullet and getting the Hensley hitch. I did, and it made a world of difference. I have had NO sway at ANY time with my current set up.

This is NOT true. In fact, just try to find a Tahoe WITHOUT a third seat!

Tahoe wheelbase- 116 inches
Tahoe body length - 202 inches
Durango wheelbase- 119 inches
Durango body length- 200.8 inches
The Durango has the longer wheelbase.
If just choosing between the Tahoe and Durango, I would choose the Durango for its longer wheelbase for better stability.
However, I would suggest the OP take a look at Suburbans. They are much bigger than the Durango or Tahoe.

You are correct Tahoe has offer 3rd row seat.
I would go with Durango Hemi 5.7L and 3.92s gear ratio since it has 5sp trans and more HP and torque compare to Tahoe.
