Couple of other things to consider in generator capacity. These generators loose available capacity as altitude increases - - so 2800 will loose somewheres to 20% of its wattage output at 10000 feet - - just something to think about if you will be traveling to higher elevations. And in our experience - the RT air conditioner is just adequate for 90-100 degree days - - don't see how a 5000 BTU air conditioner would do the job - - Jean and Jan in Colorado - 07 RT 210P

I’m in a similar situation and I’ve had no luck finding a used Onan 2800. My girlfriend did alright without AC when I had a popup but she won’t go without one now. I’ll choke but will probably end up putting in a new Onan under my 97 RT.
The long story: My genSet ran out of gas at the end of last summer and according to the head of maintenance where I work it probably over-sped when it leaned out. I took it out and up to Boston (from CT) to a Chilly Cook Off because the host graduated years ago as an electrical engineer, sales now! He hooked up a household light stand to determine what I already knew, no output. Then back home and dropped it off at a generator shop that ordered a voltage regulator "because that's what it always is". Ended up the winding spun, "that never happens". On the way to a shop to have it rewound I stopped at a CVS and my Jimmy (97 so no comprehensive) got stolen. Next day after work I cruised through a housing project near the CVS and ended up following my Jimmy trying to tell the police where I was. Decided that the chance of getting into a fender bender wasn’t worth running a light. The crook was caught that night and took the cops to where he put the genset and someone had stolen it from him, left the housing cover behind and it’s being held as evidence. I’m out the genset, some hand tools and had to put up with the smell of cigarettes and finger printing dust for a week while doing numerous vacuumings and deoderizings. After I install a replacement I'll laugh about this.

Dave, if it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have no luck at all...
IMO...forget a 'No-Ran' replacement and go with a hitch mounted Honda or Yammy.

I have found that the 11 or 12,000 btu KoolCat heatpump in my 2002 190 Popular is marginal in 100 degrees, sure would not want a smaller 5, 7 or 8,000 btu unit.
Handbasket, tell us more about this resonator in the tailpipe of an Onan 2,800 generator. I will do anything to lower the noise.

Don, see the link in Rodger's signature ('Visit My Roadtrek'). The Onan resonator is detailed in the top button on the left side of the home page. I've been able to go a lot further on the Tiger's 2.8, but it's in a compartment.

Hi,
Your suggestion of a 5000 btu AC sounds enticing, but it is totally inadequate in hot weather. We had a 5000 btu unit in a home converted van (short wheelbase Ford) with less interior volume than a RT and well insulated, and in air temperatures over mid 80's the unit was not up to the job----we sweltered. Under no circumstances would I consider a unit less than 8000 btu.

Dave, Man, you have my sympathies (not that that does you any good)! At least you seem to be keeping a positive attitude about your experience... And yes, it'll be 'just another funny incident' in later years. At least the crook who wound up with it won't get much benefit from it. Good luck with finding a replacement.
