Is there any way that as a user, we can "escape" a : so that when we need to type something like colon c it doesn't come out .
A moderator did it for me in another thread.

a colon is part of the smiley code and only one is not preceeded by a colon.
They are given with the codes in the Using the message toolbar and 4UMS code.

Hummm...never thought of it but then how often would you NEED to? I guess you could just put a space in it like : C or encased like O lock OK THAT doesn't work either

Yeah- but every now and then I want to be able to type it and not have a smiley come out. I had a post in this thread where a moderator fixed it so it isn't a smiley. I was just wondering if there is a trick that a user can use, or if it takes moderator access to do that.

I use the colon all the time. Especially when I'm giving a link to a url or a list.
For example:
- you can give a : after a letter, but not before
- to give a colon immediately before a letter often creates a smiley, i.e. should produce a winking smiley.
- most grammar puts a space right after a colon, that's why is usually works for smileys for many of us.
that's made with a semi-colon.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

If you need to a colon before a letter you can use the html character code & # 58, without spaces.
Using the html character code, here is colon C,
:C
The real downside is that if the post is quoted, the colon C will become the smiley. I will quote this post in a new post right below this one to show what I mean. One cannot even edit their own post without having to re-enter the html character code.

Ahh- Thanks Tom. Some forum software has a

feature which keeps the stuff from being changed.

Chris, I'd appreciate some context.
On what occasions in writing a sentence or phrase do you use a colon immediately before a letter?

Here is the post to which Chris refers in the originating post.
In it, he needed about:config. If one used a colon, that would come out as, about onfig
