Let's go racing!
It must be Spring if we are counting the days! DH and I are looking forward to pulling out and heading south for the camper rally to end all rallies at the races in three weeks. I'm planning on loading the camper while it is still in storage as there is no way our yard will be absent of snow or mud that early this spring.
Hope we don't need our ski gear for the weekend!
How many of you will I be seeing at the races????

OK, I will start by saying that I have never been to a NASCAR race. I love watching on tv, but honestly, I have never been able to go. I would like to know if I could take my little 23ft tt to the race area, camp with my family (son 16, daughter 12) and my wife? Would I be able to camp in an area where I could be assured that my kids and wife were safe?
I want the opportunity to attend a race with the family, but I think I may want to go to a motel instead. Input???

We are packed up and ready to go. We'll be going down Thursday morning and come home Sunday night.
As for safety--we've never had any problems with that. Most fans and rv'ers are very nice and friendly. But watch out for the scammers/scum that hang around doing the card and cup tricks--they'll clean you out if you let them.

My kids have not been sheltered. I am a former Marine and they have heard a few choice words come out of my mouth. I worry more about nudity and people getting out of control in the campgrounds. Is that an issue more at some tracks?

If ya want to take the family to a great race then Bristol is it. And there's tons of fan stuff to do too.
Bristol Motor Speedway
Here's a link. Check out the maps surrounding the track; they show all the campgrounds. Yes you can take your TT, or anything else from tent to sleeping in the front seat...lol. AT Bristol all it takes is to be a race fan. All the campgrounds at Bristol are "safe" in that there's guard patrols, and such. Motels are there, but the traffic situation is such that the closer you get to the track and can walk or bike, the better off you are. Driving even two miles on race day can take hours. CAmping advice: stay away from the camping areas directly around the creeks; they flood instantly when it rains. the Earhart sections of the track are more rolling fields, while the back of the track area (All-American) are hilly and have graveled flats cut out of the hillsides. Hope this helps.

Like you, we are just about ready to go. I plan on lugging everthing out to the storage barn to load up - cannot get the truck and trailer into our driveway because of the snow banks.
As you probably are also, we are concerned about hitting bad weather on the way down this time of year from the Chicago area. So we are leaving next Saturday (3/1) and heading south. Will spend a couple of days in Natchez and then Mobile before we head back up to Bristol. That way if we hit bad roads on the trip south we can sit back and wait it out.
Should be at Bristol sometime Wednesday afternoon - we are in space #49 above the dragstrip - stop by and say hi!

Alomost without exception the campgrounds around Bristol are safe - but maybe not sane! Check out the Bristol website for area campgrounds - there are several that offer "family" camping, some with no alcohol allowed.
Some areas can be noisy and rowdy, but most of the good ole boys are unfailingly polite.
One night my DW and I were walking through one of the other campgrounds (we camp in the BlueOx campground on track property) and not too long after she commented on "drunks of golf carts - it just doesn't get any better" we passed a guy asking "anyone want to buy a gun?"
Hotels can be a real problem - that is how we got into RVing in the first place. When we first started going to Bristol in the early 90's the closest room we could find was in Big Stone Gap, VA - over two hours away. And that was for the spring race. So we started renting trailers and have camped at the track for both races for the last 8 years.
Camping at Bristol is a real "happening", half the fun of the weekend and a whole lot better than driving back and forth to a hotel.

Star, Have a good time at the race. If you come down early enough go down to Ridgewood Barbecue off old hwy 19, Bluff City. Best around in my book, google it for info and map if you're interested. It is not a fancy building but the food is very good.
jarhead, Depends on which campground you get in and which race track. Bristol drag strip camping is pretty tame but there is usually some serious drinking. Try to camp with the nicer motorhomes if you can, they are usually a little more settled. Most everyone is respectful of others and do not cause any problems.
