Well, we went out the other day and brought home a new puppy to Chelsea. He'll never replace Frisbee, and I still haven't fluffed back up the pillow by the window where he last sat, but the sadness was too much and I needed another little buddy to have around us. People recommended I not get another bichon as I may compare the new bichon to Frisbee and actually resent it if the dog didn't behave as Frisbee did, I didn't really agree with it, but my husband did, so we went and brought home a beautiful Maltese and named him Jake(we think so far it's been Puck, Tug, Bandit and Jake!!) I think Jake is the final winner before we confuse the poor pup too much. He's a lot smaller than Frisbee was as a pup I didn't realize Maltese dogs don't usually get bigger than 10 lbs but they said that about Frisbee and he was about 20 and didn't look chubby? Jake is 14 wks old and already seems settled in with us even tho it's only been a couple of days. Right now he's napping in his crate. He's white with the softest hair and blonde eyelashes! Very playful, loves his toys and will actually bring a tennis ball back to me! He also loves to be held and sleep in your arms and he's holding his own with Chelsea, she is being very good around him.I don't know how to post pictures here so I can't put one on. I'll try to figure it out.
Thanks again for everyone's wonderful words of support. We had Frisbee cremated and once all this snow goes we will bury him by the little flower garden I have that was right near the window he sat by for his daily sunbath.
Any advice on Maltese training...let me know. I'm printing out everything I can find on the internet about training. We're doing the crate training method and he seems comfy in it and then I wisk him right outside to do his business so he gets the idea. We only put him in there for naps while I work at home or leave the house and sleeps in it at night. If he ever fell off our bed...he's just to small right now but we put the crate right next to the bed and he whimpers for just a minute and then snuggles into his fleece blanket.

Lizzi is the first dog I've crate trained and it just makes her so much more comfortable, safe and secure when we're not with her. She traveled for the first time this weekend in her crate in our double cab truck and slept the whole time. If we had to leave her in the trailer she was safely in her crate. Duh, why did I have 5 other dogs without a crate?

Absolutely - particularly for tiny dogs. Maggie is perfectly content in her crate any time we put her in it - which is when we are leaving (home or RV) or at night mainly. Occasionally I will put her in there when I am extra busy and she is demanding to be held but not often. She will go there on her own if she is not feeling well but rarely other than that.
See ya' down the road!

Your little Jake sounds adorable. We have a 9 month Maltese/Shi Tzu mix and she is so cute. I can't tell you how to raise a Maltese other than pretty much like any other dog.
We still haven't got Daisy Mae house broken but we're still working on it. Vet said it could take a year for these little pups. Quite seriously, Daisy Mae is not the smartest dog I have owned but we really don't care. Our little Schnauzer, Dixie Dew, is too smart enough for both of them.
The only advice I can give you is to be sure to brush him daily and keep his coat well conditioned. When my dad was in intensive care for two weeks, we neglected Daisy Mae's brushings. It was a lot of work to get the knots out. It was really hard on her.
I went to the ethnic isle in Wally World and bought a thick conditioning cream that comes in a jar. It is cholesterol based and priced very reasonably. It seems to condition her coat beautifully and helps keep out the knots. If you want the name, PM me.

That is wonderful news. I am always happy to have a puppy around when grieving a loss because they are very distracting and a sign that love goes on.
Koko was crate trained and hasn't been in one for years, but it was a great way to deal with a pup. She graduated up to a cage when she got bigger and she had the door open when she was fully housebroken and she continued to sleep in there until we just put the cage up to have more room in the bedroom. They like there crates.

I'm really happy for you and I don't agree with not getting another as the same breed. When we lost Sofie my DH wanted another Lab and right away. We've always had Labs so there's no question for us. Yes you do compare some things, but being the same breed that's only natural.
Our Sofie was a Frisbee hound, our new pup is a ball hound, if we throw the Frisbee.....when it comes down she ducks, she's hysterical to watch.
Best of luck with Jake, your not replacing, just refocusing your energy and it does help.
