We have several times taken a 10 day trip with just a general idea where we are going. These trips are not much more than 1000 miles, stay off interstates and away from cities. Find a small campground, stay about two nights in each and in the evening drive to a nearby small town and go for a walk in the evening up and down the main street. Maybe have a beer and then head back to the rig. Trips are circular so we dont come back the same roads. We travel only the two lanes, very relaxing and enjoyable.
I would like to try this one time - maybe in a few years when the kids stop coming with us. I think this is more feasible now with cell phones, because people can get in touch with you without knowing where you are staying.
I'd also have to get over the organizer in me, because I like everything planned ahead so there aren't any surprises. It would be easier if it were just my wife and I (and the dog).
Another problem, especially during prime vacation season, is that many campgrounds get filled up and require reservations. This would limit the number of places you could stay at. Also, I don't want to drive to five different campgrounds until I get one that has a site.
