Water pooling, dirt are two possible answers. Find the source of the problem, fix it and then bleach everything in site to get rid of the spores.

Yup. Had the same problem here in Lake Panasoffkee, Florida. I removed the shroud, the wife and I removed around 25 screws to get to the evaporator coils and drain pan. Cleaned all the dirt and dust out. Sprayed a 50% water 50% bleach mixture on everything. Closed it back up. It didn't do a thing. Next time we used the A/C, had the mold smell. I posted on the NuWa trailer forum site about it and was told to buy BG Frigi-Fresh or BG Frigi-Clean. Made mostly for using in cars and trucks A/Cs. We got some and started using it. Sprayed the coils first and let set for a few days then when ever the A/C would kick on would spray the stuff through the intake vent. Also had one cool morning where we turned on the heat pump and I think that helped too. No more mold smell.
