We are looking for something to put on our couch that pulls out into a full size bed to make it more comfortable to sleep on, so that you don't feel the metal bar. Any suggestions?

An air mattress? They are putting couches in new models with a pull out air mattress. You might could retro fit or buy new or just simply add an air mattress on top of your current mattress.

Randy, the below is a post I made several months ago when I replaced my sleeper sofa with a futon because of the same issues you have with yours. Check out the futon packages on the companies web site. I can tell you that the quality of their futons is outstanding. Just make sure you measure real good before ordering. By the way, the bed is very comfortable too.

I ended up ordering through a company called "futonsnow.com". They have all kinds of sizes and great packages. The futon I ordered was a loveseat futon (the San Juan) which makes in to a great bed and left plenty of room to walk around my counter to the exit door. I already took the old love seat sofa sleeper out and put the futon in. It is much nicer than I expected and the wood frame matched my interior. It's also alot more comfortable as a couch too.
Look at the "futon packages" if you're interested. The prices are great and the quality of the frames are outstanding. I couldnt believe how much bigger the bed was than the sofa sleeper. The sofa sleepers they put in RV's have very cheep/thin mattresses and they waste about 5 to 6 inches of space on each side. The futons give you approx an extra foot width and are approx 1 1/2 feet longer. Whats funny is that my futon makes a much bigger sleeping area and takes up less room because when folded out, it goes against the wall.
If you're thinking of doing this, you won't regret it.
By the way. The price on the page is the price you pay. There's no tax or shipping charges.....

You can buy a plastic folding panel that goes across the bar in the hide a bed. Costs $20. Brylane Home I think is where I saw it online.

Another vote for replacing it with a quality futon. We did so in our Westport and daughter and SIL who now own it are quite happy with it. In our current 5vr it isn't feasible otherwise this one would be replaced also. We're looking at the possibility of replacing ours with a double rocker/recliner love seat since we don't need it for sleeping.

We traded up from a 2 slide 5er to a 3 slider and got the most uncomfortable couch imaginable. I'm glad to hear your suggestions to improve it. The futon idea sounds good. Right now we just have one of those egg crate things on it for sleeping. Forget taking a nap on it closed! Now that's on my list of things to check before buying again.

The egg crate foam toppers that are available should do the job and are dense enough to take care of the problem. I am not sure if you have a hid-a-bed or a jacknife sofa. This should work with either. Good luck

Hi RandyI81,
My 1999 Cardinal fifth wheel has a very uncomfortable (for sleeping) pull-out couch. You can feel the bar through the thin mattress and as I said it is very uncomfortable. I took a sheet of ½” plywood and cut three 16”x60” pieces and hinged then together so when they are unfolded they make a 48”x60” sheet that I slide under the mattress. This helps a lot, at least you don’t feel the bar and when the couch is folded up, the three piece plywood folds into a 16”x60” bundle and goes under the queen bed in the storage area.
I noticed that Screamingeagle purchased a “plastic folding panel”. This might be similar to my home made arrangement and it would probably be lighter. I didn’t know they made such a thing.
Good luck and happy camping.

We too had an uncomfortable couch and decided to go to a furniture store to replace it with with a "conventional" loveseat--one of the best investments we have made!

I thought sleeper sofas were designed to be uncomfortable for a reason. We like 'em that way. Keeps the guests to a minimum. We also have the cheapest mattress we could find in the guest room of our s&b.
