Picked up my kids first dirt bike today (Honda CRF70). He's got a decent helmet, a chest protector and gloves. He's 8 years old and seems to go through shoe sizes monthly. What would those more experienced than me recommend for footwear? I don't want to spend the money on a new pair of riding boots every couple months. Would a decent pair of high top leather boots work?

High top boots would work fine. Though this is a case where EBAY would work great for you. Other kids go through the same thing and the boots end up there all the time.

I agree the high top boots should be fine but I would recommend looking for some regular riding boots. We have been able to buy my daughters boots a size or 2 big and she has made it a whole riding season on 1 pair. Look around for used ones or the clearance boots on any of the websites. I know her boots have definitely made a difference on more than one occassion.

In a word NO. High top boots won't protect their calf. A good friend of mine slipped and put his foot peg through his calf...he was wearing leather construction boots...

It's great that you are getting your kid into riding. Start them off with the proper safety habits as well. Never let them swing a leg over without the following:

Boots, Helmet, Goggles, Proper riding pants, and jersey, chest protector, neck brace, under the pants knee pads, and elbow guards. This is your kid's body. Don't "cheap out".

As I mentioned to another poster... make friends with some off road enthusiasts. Trade gear as your children grow.

Oh yea, my friends 8 year old crashed and the pipe burned through his pants but luckily didn't burn him only the back of the top of his riding boots...

The ARC boots on rockymountainatv.com are a great deal. For a while, we had a pair in every size from 2 to 13 and as the kids grew, we just moved them up the line. As the youngest moves up, we just trade gear with other families we know.

Initially, I griped because it was expensive, but as another poster said, don't cheap out on the kids. All my children know that they have to be fully geared up before they ride.

In fact, the last time I was at sandlake, the picture on the safety poster at the paystation was of my littlest one and I, taken at one of the cleanups.

Children are unpredictable. You never know how high up the wall they're going to drive you

RE: The pictures above, that is what I like to see boots, gloves, flag, helmet and goggles, backpack with water and a chest protector. And the surf is up, great picture.
