What brand and type gear lube do "yall" suggest? It was changed at the stealership around 20K or so. It has the locking differential. How many quarts for the rear and front also?

For the rear axle, I changed the grape juice at 500 miles to Mobil 1 75w-90. I haven't changed the front axle lube.
The owner's manual will give capacities.

I used Mobil 1 75w-90 in both diffs on my '01. I wasn't about to pay what the GM dealer wanted for their synthetic.

Another vote for Mobile1 - Go to Dieselplace.com and look for an oil comparison in the fluids section

The GM Gov-lock (G80) does not use clutches, so no friction modifiers or additives are necessary. Mobil 1 75W90 or 75W140 (if you tow really heavy) should work just fine.

I've used both Mobil 1 75W-90 and Redline 75W-140, which I run now, in the rear. I have Redlin 75W-90 in the front. Both brands, among others are excellent.

Make sure you check the manual for the fluid spec, as most OEMs today have
special formulations. I think to get folks to 'have to' go to the OEM parts
counter, but that is just my thoughts on that. Most after market suppliers
will over time, match those spec's but that may take a couple years or so.

The Eaton G80 (GM option code is also G80) locker does use 'clutches' as the
locking mechanism. Clutches but they do not 'slip', much.

Here is the link to a previous thread on this topic, but that embedded link does
not contain the same info as before. Eaton has removed the content for some
reason. Here is the link to the thread on this board:
http://www.woodalls.com/cforum/index.cfm........d/12563693/gotomsg/12587045.cfm#12587045

and the text from that thread:

Go to Eaton site and read up.

Here's link: http://automotive.eaton.com/product/traction_stability/lockingdiff.html

Seems no one really wants to use the hot link, so here's the text below.

It is a locker, the manufacturer says so.
======================================================================

Availability

¨ Standard Equipment on Dual Wheel 3500 Series trucks.

¨ Optional Equipment (G80 Order Code) on all GM two-wheel and four-wheel drive light trucks and sport utilities.

Benefits

¨ Improved traction differentiates the vehicle relative to other rear wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles on the market.

¨ Functions as a limited slip differential during normal driving conditions; provides full axle lock when needed.

¨ Maintenance free; requires no lube additives.

¨ Enhanced towing and off-road performance.

¨ Patented carbon friction disc technology enhances performance and durability while reducing warranty claims.

Principles of Operation

¨ Wheel speed difference (left to right) in excess of 100 RPM will cause a flyweight mechanism to open and catch a latching bracket.

¨ The stopped flyweight will trigger a self-energizing clutch system, which results in the cam plate ramping against a side gear.

¨ Ramping increases until both axles turn at the same speed (full lock), which prevents further wheel slip.

¨ At speeds above 20MPH, the latching bracket swings away from the governor and prevents lockup from occurring.

Technical Specifications

¨ Automatic locking takes place within a fraction of a second, so smoothly that it is unnoticed by the average driver.

¨ Unlocking occurs automatically, once the need for improved traction is gone, and is unnoticeable to the average driver.

¨ Compatible with anti-lock brake systems.
