I think we still spend more on alcohol than diesel. No plans yet to cut out either one.
I’m more concerned about the fuel prices on the lake this year. I’m guessing it will be at or above $6.00 a gallon. On our annual houseboat trip we usually put about 30 gallons in the ski boat every day. (OUCH!)

I have no plans to stop I just ordered a New Hauler hope to have it by summer...I have been having trouble selling the old hauler over a month and no calls, I think a lot of people are rethinking the fun factor verses fuel costs...for me the fun factor wins hands down!!

I think its affecting those of us with gas tow vehicles that get crappy gas mileage while towing more than the diesel owners. I know I get 5-8 mpg while towing my fiver, which makes long trips very heavy on the wallet. 26 in the trailer and 26 in the truck, plus 10 of 92 for the bike just to start... and stops at every other gas station along the way makes for an expensive trip. oh well, wanna play gotta pay I guess...

I feel ya, but you get a little worse mileage but the oil burners are paying 50 or more cents per gallon. So, it washes out the mpg gain.

We all keep saying fuel is expensive but if you look at relative costs it is still cheap.

When I moved to San Diego 12 years ago the same house I looked at for 180K is now 1 million dollars.

If you look at gas over the last ten years it has held steady until the last couple of years.

I just got back from Europe and was paying just under $9 a gallon for gas in London.

I have a friend who is an oil analyst, he is on all the cable finance shows and he says diesel will be $6 in about 12-18 months and gas will be nearing $5.

I am not too compassionate for recreational RV owners as if we didnt have money we wouldnt have 40 foot haulers full of toys. The guy who gets hurt is the blue collar working man who cant afford gas for his car to get to work. Those people are going to hurt and I think once they really feel it we will feel the ripple across the greater economy as they will stop spending on all luxury items such as tv's, etc.

This will drive us into a long term recession.

Just to rub it in I hear gas is 5 cents a gallon in Iraq. It is cheaper than water.

For now, paying these outrageous prices for gas has not stop me from taking the TH, truck and toys out. However, for me, if I can not go camping for 3 days or more, I stay home (in other words, I won't go just for a weekend). But, I work a 4/10 schedule and have Sat, Sun & Mon off every week that gets me that 3 day weekend.

If I only had 2 days to camp, I wouldn't go as often. As it is now, I still average at least a 3 or 4 day trip once a month. I figure the BIGGEST expense is driving to the spot, so once there, the longer I stay, the cheaper it is in the long run. Plus, I only have to travel about 35-130 miles, one way, for the places I go to (which include the beach, forest or desert).

Not to mention, where can you go and enjoy the outdoors with friends and family, camp, ride and just relax for about $350-$500 that includes fuel, lodging (RV), food and entertainment for 3-5 days of fun.

Plus, during the week, the truck stays home and our civic is our commute car, so we save money each week (about $45 worth in gas) that goes toward our extended weekend trips.

Boating is my most expensive sport too. Last summer I was at the lake once or twice a week. This year my boat won't run on Thanks.

How has the fuel cost affected your future travel plans, if any. I am considered staying home for Easter. At $4.09 a gallon for diesel I am thinking of parking it for the rest of the season. I may be overacting but it is getting crazy.

Since we purchased our TH I've told my wife that we won't go anywhere with it unless we're staying at least three nights due to the amount of work that is involved. This rings true for fuel prices as well. You just have to make the trip worth going for. This is also a good way to make myself take some time off work. Three to four day weekends are a great way to recharge your own batteries.

Personally, I think your buddy is off the mark. While I think diesel has the potential to touch $5.00 this year (primarily a function of the value of the dollar) slowing economies around the world will limit the demand in the short run. Also, every rig in the world is poking holes in the ground for oil. I expect a leveling of prices somewhere around $4.00 for a few years before accelerating again. This presumes there is no large political event in one of the major producers that substantially cuts production for some period of time.

I have cut plans for overseas travel except Mexico. The value of the dollar compared to many currencies make most overseas travel unattractive.

So, If I want to travel my best bet is here in the USA. While we've cut the length and distance of some trips we will still RV. Just closer to home.

On a side note I fueled up today and was excited when I found a station selling for $3.67/gallon! What a bargain!
