I have a 07 Raptor 3612 with a Onan quiet gold 5500 generator. I bought this new and I have had other units with Onans. My problem is when I turn on my 120 volt overhead lights in the dinette or if I plug in a trouble light in any of the receptacles I get a flickering when viewing any of the lights. This is the equivalent of having a moth flying around the light, very annoying! The dealer I purchased the unit from said "everything was fine and they didn't notice it". I took the fifth to Cummins Onan Western Canada and they spent 5 hours determining whether the fault was with the Toyhauler or the generator. After all the test were run, they agreed, the generator was at fault and pulled it out of the toyhauler. A month later after replacing all the generator parts and they called in desparation to Onans technical support department, the Technical support line said "All of the Onan 5500 series generators flicker like that, most RV's only have 12 lighting so they dont see the flickering. The battery works as a buffer so it does not affect 12 volt lighting. My concern obviously is the annoying flickering but also how will this affect my electronics (TV, 120 volt surround sound, laptop, etc).
Could you fellow owners of Onan 5500 please tell me if your lights flicker with a normal 60 watt trouble light or other 120 volt lighting plugged in. I find it hard to believe that they would produce a product that would be acting like this.
Thanks in advance
Scott

I have the same generator in my Cross Terrain and do not have that or any problem with it no matter what or how much load I put on it. I don't know what the problem with yours may be but it ain't right???

I had a Raptor 3612 and never had issues like that, have the same generator and I've used outside incandescent lights and had no flicker as well.

I had a simmilar problem with my 06 3712. The lights were kinda like a strobe light. My dealer told me that the inverter is too small and Keystone isn't willing to step up and fix it. My warrenty covered the cost of the existing unit and I paid the difference for a larger inverter. Haven't noticed the lights flicker, but I made this change and put my trailer away for winter. I have only tried out the lights while running the generator to warm it up a few times through winter.

I have a 3814 with the same gen set and no problems like you describe. I really only have one light that runs off the genny and that is the ceiling fan light; however, it does not flicker. My genset has been rock solid with about 25 hours on it so far.

Thanks guys for the speedy replies! I knew this was not "normal". I needed confirmation that other owners are not having the problems I am experiencing. Keep the replies coming if you have any experiance with this topic good or bad. I will be using the answers as testimonials that their product works great and mine is the exception. I have had Onan products before and currently in my Arctic Fox camper I have the Onan 2500. I have never had an issue with their products.
Thanks again, Keep the replies coming.
