I know this has been discussed but I've tried all the standard suggestions.

My xp laptop takes three to five minutes to startup. Once it's open it runs fine. Did the msconfig check and no un-needed programs are starting. I use AVG virus protection, ran a scan, no problems. I use a pc optimizer, do disk defrag, clean the temp folder, do disk clean up, and do a complete disk scan on a regular basis.

I uninstalled the AVG program and it helped a bit but it was still pretty slow starting (two to three minutes). The only thing I haven't done is reinstall XP Windows. Would that do anything?

What else should I try?

Ah for the good old days.. I would flip the power switch on my Commodore 64 and NINE SECONDS LATER, yes NINE SECONDS LATER it was up and running and the modem was dialing Compuserve NINE SECONDS!!!!!

Nine seconds today and the computer is still doing it's POST (Power On Self Test)

Uninstalling AVG was a mistake, put it back, Internetting is a dangerous active Practice Safe HEX, Use anti-mailware condoms, AVG is just one of the things you should have on line all the time, Zone Alarm (Free version) is another Yes this will slow you down, It will make it take longer to boot up, But it won't do half the damage a nasty viral program will do.

How much RAM memory do you have? Sounds like it's having to do a lot of swapping...if you have a lot of programs that load up at startup it will require a lot of RAM. If you are short on RAM then it must use disk swap space which can take a loooong time swapping back and forth at startup...

anytime you add protection to your laptop it slows it up .not much you can do expect remove it,which you don't want to do. just keep it defrag, clean up cookies when possible.

Verify that you have at least 20% free disk space. Set your page file to a fixed size, equal to the amount of RAM you have installed will work fine. I know you said you do this, run a defrag. I've had to run defrag two or thee times.

Also do you run any agents? That is preloaded software like that used for instant messaging, the MS Office Startup, Webshots, etc? Those things are useless anyway and massively slow down startup time. Disable unneeded services too. For example, my laptop came with XP Media Center edition. I have no use for those features, which has 3 or 4 services associated with it. I disabled them and shaved about 30 seconds off of boot up time. If you've got a GB or more of RAM, you have more then enough for startup, even if you're loading a lot during startup. Keep in mind that everything that loads at boot time is fighting for processor time with each other. That will slow performance dramatically.

Consider using F-Prot for A/V. Its not free, but its pretty cheap, and its less intrusive to performance. I switched about a year and half ago and I couldn't be happier with it.

I agree with both the other posts, especially the AVG and the RAM.
Since it's a laptop, check your 'power options", if it set for max battery life, performance fails off fast.
My old XP desktop with factory 512 MB RAM took about 3 minutes to start up, after I added a GB of RAM, start up was in the less than a minute (70 seconds to dialing)
Current Vista laptop(1GB RAM) takes 2:40 before I can even start to connect.

Consider not shutting down the laptop and use Hibernate instead. Windows computers will come out of Hibernate in 10 seconds or so. My Macs come out of Sleep in 2-3 seconds.

I only turn my computers off if an update was installed that needs a restart.

That's exactly what I do. Saves a LOT of frustration!!

When you say "no unneeded programs are starting" are you certain what qualifies as unneeded? You should also check your Startup folder as I do not believe these are covered by MSCONFIG. Typically if your problems are only on startup it is not RAM as this would impact you all the time and get worse as you use the computer.

I would look for things starting such as the Quick-start applications such as Adobe, Quicktime, or Windows Messenger and also the Check-for-Update programs such as HP, Adobe, quicktime, etc. These pile up and are startup killers.

If you are handy, rather than use MSCONFIG, you can go into Regedit and clean out the two RUN folders for Windows Currentversion. I do this every couple of weeks - typically when I notice Windows Messenger has re-install itself in my startup path.
