I wouldn't consider moving with the speed of traffic at the legal speed limit "macho" -- but I would consider somebody poking along at just over 50mph a "hazard." That's what the 2-lane backroads are for. Stick to them if saving a buck or two on gas is that important. They're usually more scenic anyway.

I think that I follow that guy driving 55 mph today on a two lane highway with a speed limit of 70 mph. It was a twisting curving highway with very little passing opportunities. There were 15 to 20 vehicles behind him. Everything from cars, rv' and trucks. When it all started I was the 5th one behind him. I finally found a place to pull off and had lunch.
It might be economical to drive 55, but it sure is not pleasant to be behind one on a 70 mph hiway with no place to pass.

If the speed limit is 70 and the mean speed of traffic is 70-75, if you are doing less than 55, you are a hazard. This is an indisputable fact. You can't just think of yourself folks. NEVER travel 15 mph less than the average speed of the traffic. It is selfish and inconsiderate. Sorry if it costs you more, but causing an accident is far worse than a lighter wallet.

HERE in MI .... a 70 mph posted speed-limit has a minimum speed limit of 45 mph.
The HAZARDS are the people who drive well-OVER the speed limit. And I am not an Old-Foogie who is "scared" to go any faster. I have a race car that runs over 140 mph ...in the 1/4 mile.
In a hurry ? ... get a jet-plane ! ... so Slow Down(conserve fuel) and enjoy the view !

I've driven in almost every state and I don't recall ever seeing a 2-lane highway with a 70 MPH speed limit. I suppose there might be one somewhere, but it wouldn't be the norm.
Instead, I'd say the norm is more like a 60 MPH limit on a 2-lane highway. While leads me to ask why one would say it's better to drive 10 MPH over than 5 MPH under the limit. Especially for a MH?
I get annoyed just as quickly as anyone at the road hogs that camp out in the fast lane or ignore long strings of cars without pulling over and letting them pass. Just ask my wife--we have to drive 2 hours on a 45-55 MPH 2-lane highway and there is only 1 short passing lane going south and none going back north. But, if I'm in the coach and doing my usual 58 MPH and I get a string of cars behind me, I pull over even though I'm doing 3 over the limit.

The AREA that comes to mind concerning this senerio is rolling-through the FL Keys on US-1. Many MANY times(while driving 45-50 mph and cars are stacking-up behind me) I will pull over and enjoy the scenery ! .... and then in those fairly-short passing areas ? .... I will slow up in the far right so everyone can pass. Being a slow-poke a lot has very rarely ever gotten me a "middle-finger-gesture" ... most often I get a thumbs-up or a thank-you "wave" !
Just common-courtesy.

Typical speed demon.
20 miles
21m:49s @ 55 mph
17m:08s @ 70 mph
Minutes saved or wasted--> 4m:41s
Is saving 5 minutes really worth the danger and fuel inefficiency of operating a 15 ton rig at high speed?
