I just got word from my insurance company that my Jayco 23FB is a total loss from a hail storm it went through. The front is really to only side that took a beating. The sides have a few dings here and there. My insurance is offering $14K and I can buy it back with a salvage title. I'm not sure what the salvage buy back is (they will call me Monday).

Is it worth buying the trailer back or take the money and get a new one?

Has anyone had any experience with salvage titles?

There isn't anything wrong with the trailer, it just has a bunch of dings in it.

If your planning on keeping this unit until the wheels fall off, no problem with a salvage title. However, do not expect to get decent value for it should you decide to sell.

I would suggest you call your dmv office and see what you can do with a salvage title. IF you can still use it on the road and tag it then it is your decision.

Can you live with the dents?? Is it still financed?? If so then the bank will step in also and the decision might not be yours. You could always buy it as salvage after the bank gets their cut but you would have a trailer paid for.

Don't know your whole situation so I really can't advise.

Call your DMV. In most states a salvage title is more of a warning to a buyer that a vehicle was, at one time and in the opinion of the insurance company, totaled. My business partner's Probe was 'totaled' about ten years ago. She bought it back with a salvage title, paid off the loan, got the front end repaired and ended up with $1000 in her pocket. She's still driving it.

If the trailer isn't leaking & you don't mind the dings, I'd say do it.

Everybody is right on with their advice. I just went through this with an automobile here in NC.

I'll offer this advice it you are really interested in buying the unit to keep and use. (notice, I said USE...) don't think you can resell it for a big profit.... although you may sometime in the future...

This advice from someone with a few years in the insurance adjusting business......

Here's the advice.. and it's only as good as the price you paid for it... The insurance Adjuster usually doesn't have much leeway on what he can offer you for your trailer, but jack him as high as you can. Do some searches on used trailer prices. You can get more by appearing to be knowledgeable of current retail prices.

After you get that value established, tell him/her that you have been looking at replacements and they are all priced far and above what he is offering. That is when you tell him that if the salvage value could be lowered to a more reasonable figure that you could make the numbers work. Have a reasonable figure in mind that you want to pay. The difference between the value offered and the salvage value is what you are concerned with. right? Good luck..

Good deal only if you plan to keep the unit your exposure is when you try to sell or trade.

A salvage title can reduce the trade-in or resale value as much as 50% from the book value.

I think I would take the money and get a new TT. If you are wanting to get rid of it in a few years, you won't get that much money when you trade.

maybe you could buy it back and part it out. if you have the room to store it.

I had a similar incident. Small water leak by window with little damage on my 04 TT. When insurance totaled it they paid for EVERYTHING in that trailer. You need to make sure to itemize things with them. They covered 2 TV sets,a VCR,DVD player,& my inverter. The TT also had brand new tires. I negotiated salvage and bought it back. After I removed all the items that wanted to "salvage" I then sold it "AS IS" to a deer hunter. There is an amazing amount of avid hunters that love a good deal on a "deer camp trailer". Most of these people don't tow them but one time (to camp) and leave them as a cabin. I have seen many half rotted travel trailers find a nice retirement in hunting camps. Just some food for thought.
