Last week we were in an RV park in Redding, CA and were alarmed at the police (Sheriff actually) presence there. In the space of less than 2 hours there were 3 visits by them including an unmarked detectives unit. On our departure we asked the attendant what was occurring. She stated that the Sheriffs’ dept periodically made sweeps contacting those on parole, Megan's law registrants, as well as for "other" reasons. It appears there is increasing numbers of those types of persons moving into RV camps where the monthly rent is relatively low and there are no background checks (i.e. credit checks etc). Has anyone else noted this? We had noted upon entering that there were particularly large numbers of rigs that had been there an extended time. Many were "older" and in need of upkeep. We left the next morning and will not return there.

So...you're selling the RV because of this? Seems extreme to me. They're probably near your stick home also.

I lived over 30 years in Salem, Oregon...we have 4 prisons within 5 miles -- the main State Prison is right in the middle of town. For years -- way too many years -- the requirement when the cons go on parole is they stay IN town....and some stay in town because their spouses moved to be close to them and they all can't afford to move out. I worked with many ex-cons and spouses of cons. I'm sorry - I chuckle when someone gets frightened when they find out they're close to "those types". Yes....we have to be care WHEREEVER we are......but to not go to a campground because some ex-cons live there....well, you won't find many places that doesn't have ex-cons....there are more of them out there than you'd ever believe. Besides, I'd rather live next to an ex-con than a politician -- oops - guess they can be one in the same!!

Some registered sex offenders were 19 year olds who had sex with a 17 year old, or a college guy who was arrested for mooning someone or streaking across campus. Not all sex offenders are violent madmen who rape womeon at random or have sex with 4 year olds. In some states, the laws don't separate the two. We need to use caution at all times, but also use common sense. Besides these guys are being watched, they're probably far less dangerous than the ones we don't know about yet!

Which explains the high rate of re-incarceration's. Guess all that close watching just wasn't close enough. Still, I agree with others that one always needs to be aware of their surroundings. Regrettably all the more so in todays world.

Ain't life grand??? Who would think there were undesirables living in North America?
We have found, especially near metropolitan areas, there is an ever increasing number of folks who cannot afford housing who are buying older RV's and staying in local campgrounds.
Just be careful folks!

There are a few exceptions but do not minimize the impact or the severity of sexual offenders and their crime against society. I take offense at that. And if you believe they are being watched then you need to do a little more research on that, or just read the paper. A very large percent of sexual offenders quit registering at some point and they are lost in the system. Those who continue to see things through rose colored glasses are setting themselves and everyone else up for failure.
