Last week we were in an RV park in Redding, CA and were alarmed at the police (Sheriff actually) presence there. In the space of less than 2 hours there were 3 visits by them including an unmarked detectives unit. On our departure we asked the attendant what was occurring. She stated that the Sheriffs’ dept periodically made sweeps contacting those on parole, Megan's law registrants, as well as for "other" reasons. It appears there is increasing numbers of those types of persons moving into RV camps where the monthly rent is relatively low and there are no background checks (i.e. credit checks etc). Has anyone else noted this? We had noted upon entering that there were particularly large numbers of rigs that had been there an extended time. Many were "older" and in need of upkeep. We left the next morning and will not return there.

Your looking at this all wrong. I would definitely, certainly, go back to that campground again. The local Sheriff knows his responsibility and does the job with gusto. What your saying is like the mantra of not going to a football game because they are checking coolers, since people used to bring in "drugs". Well, they don't anymore. As for those people who retire to or season at a single RV park, and let weeds grow under the rig. I too am sometimes uncomfortable parked next to a school bus from the 60's with newspaper curtains. Yet, I've met some real interesting people by just saying hi. Back to the Sheriff, perhaps you should write him a note, suggesting they do patrols in older Toyota, so as not to alarm the visitors. By the way, some people look at our (generic term) big fancy motorhomes, and assume we are involved in drug money, or exploiting Chinese children. Just my opinion, no offense intended. Happy Trails All.
I think I would feel better about an RV park where the police make appearances. The 'lower strata' residents are less likely to engage in illicit activities if they know they are on the local police watch list. It's when the bad guys are ignored they start trouble.
On a semi-related side note...
The Forest Service gives funds to local county sheriffs to swing through FS campgrounds on evening patrols during the summer. Tends to keep the party crowd a bit more muted.
