Strong bleach solutions will eat some stainless steel alloys, it would be best to use solutions about like Rodger mentions, 1/4 cup per 15 gallons. Some of the components in an RV water system will be stainless, like return springs in valves, possibly water tanks etc. I once saw a 5 gallon Coke syrup tank pinholed with bleach.

Is it ok to run all the water that is cleaning the fresh water tank into the grey and black tank and use it to clean them out also? Then dump the tanks. I have never had a black water tank before so this is new to me. The porta potti was very easy.

Sure, it would be OK to rinse the black and grey tanks with the strong bleach solution, but then I would dump it and do a final rinse with fresh water.

I think you would need a lot more than a little bleach solution to sanitize the holding tank. You can run the solution through the tank, but why bother, your just going to poop in it again anyway. Better way to clean the holding tanks is with a Quickie Flush or something similar.

Len, Rebecca & MacDuff , Just as a clarifcation, a "Holding tank" is usually in reference to the "Gray" and "Black" tanks, not the "fresh water" tank. You are right to be concerened about sanitizing, but after you have sanitized and you know it is Clean, just be aware of your water source when you fill your tank and you should be OK after that. If you have any question about the source that you are putting in your tank, don't put it in. I use my tank exclusively and usually fill from a "City" source that uses good clorination procedure. I drink my tap water at home and I drink water from my tank in the MH. Never had a problem in over 35 years of RVing.

RE: bad smell
I recently came across this article that was in the Sunline folder containing all the info about the equipment instructions and ect. This article was approved by the U.S. Public Health Services. To assure complete disinfection of potable water systems. First drain system. Then prepare a chlorine solution using 1 gallon of water and 1/4 cup of household bleach. With tank empty, pour bleach solution into tank. use 1 gallon solution for each 15 gallons of tank capacity. This procedure will result in a residual chlorine concentration of 50 ppm in the water system. Complete filling of tank with potable water till full. Then open each faucet and run water until a distinct odor of chorine can be detected in the water discharged. Remember to open all faucet's Hot and cold water to sink, bath room lavatory, bath shower inside and outside. Then allow system to stand for at least 4 hours when using the 50 ppm solution. If a shorter time is desired, then use a 100 ppm solution. For a 100 ppm solution use 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water. Then use the above procedure and let stand for 1 hour. When whatever time you choose to use is up. Drain and Flush System with Potable water. Also I belive this a good thing because when you drain the solution into your gray/black holding tanks you will be disinfecting them!!!!
How many of you are concerned about your holding tank water?

Run that solution through all the water lines, leave it for a few hours, then drain, and flush the system. A little white vinegar added to the water tank will remove the chlorine odor.
Drain the fresh water tank through its drain valve onto the ground then hook up to water and flush the lines???
