Ok here it goes. I have a 1996 Ford F250 fwd with a 460 and 4.11 differential. Towing capacity max is 12k. I want to tow my 5th wheel which is 36' and around 11K on one trip to my place in Montana. The trip is about 1300 miles. I still need to check on gvw issues. My question is, does anyone have a similar set up? I'm sure that there are many opinions on this. As I've stated I still need to check all the weight issues.

One trip? Make sure the trailer is empty, tires and brakes in good shape and tow it up there!

I DOUBT if you're concerned about warranty on your truck so the numbers you need to be concerned about are the trucks GVWR and the rear axle GAWR. Good luck / Skip

Make sure your trucks tires and brakes are in good working order, tires Load Range "E" pumped up to 80PSI, trailer tires and brakes in good working order, pumped up to proper setting(don't forget your spares), lightly load the trailer, leave water tanks empty, stay at the speed limit and you will have a fun trip. I carried 6-8 500lb weight boxes for elevator testing in that year F-350 SRW 4x4 trucks many many times and the trucks held up well, the 460 is a guzzler but a great towing engine

I have used several 460ci ford enginees to pull 5th wheels, my last one pulled a 35' 5th with slide out, coast to coast no trouble. it is a good enginee just stand on it and don't miss a gas station.

Take Care

Thanks for the replies.
I forgot to ask about mpg. I am hoping for at least 5 mpg, is that a reasonable expectation?

Just curious, why are you not using the CTD in your sig? Is it because it is 2wd?

i have the same truck, 95 ford f250 4x with the 460/5 spd. you will have NO trouble at all with that trailer. stay at 60 mph or so....i get 9 1/2 to 10 mpg, at around 62. i also have NO trouble with mountains....and here in montana, we have MOUNTAINS! the faster you go, the lower the mileage. like others said above, please make sure your tires and brakes are up to it.

The Dodge has a few problems. It was also suppose to be sold. However I may end up fixing it and using it. The ford was purchased to be left in Montana for use when we come up. The Dodge has the gooseneck hitch installed and nice towing mirrors and when it is running correctly it tows great.

I figure I will need to invest another 2k to get it running again. I am going to have the Banks system remove and maybe a chip installed. The Banks system is great when it is working. But because of the problems I have had, I would never do it again. I spent around $3500.00 for the system and it worked for a few months and had to have the electronics replaced. Then not 6 months later it quit working. When I finally took it in again I was told that the electronics are obsolete and can't be replaced. They replace the wiring harness plug and it lasted another 6 or 7 months. So I am tired of messing with the Banks system.

11 k sounds a little light for a 36 ft'er. Have it weighed. I suspect that it might come in around 12-13. Unless it doesn't have any slides.
