How difficult with the new Homeland Security rules is it to go into Canada and back to the US in a class C? Passports?, Kids?...

You should carry passports. You will probably be inspected on both sides and its more likely that if you only get inspected on one side, it'll be the US side. If you travel with kids that aren't your own, you'll need a notarized letter from the parents authorizing you to travel with their kids. Check the US Border Patrol website for further info.

Passport is best. Birth certificate plus government issued photo id is still OK.
If both parents are not traveling with the kids you need a letter signed by both parents that it is OK to take them out of the country.

Thanks Folks, I was thinking of taking the family up to Niagara falls. Wondering how much grief to expect.

We took my Grandchildren back in 2004. Going into Canada, no questions were asked, nor documentation asked for.

Have fun!

Even if they are your kids and both parents are present take a birth certificate for all of you. Especially kids. It took us over two hours to get through the imagration office walking across the bridge at Niagara falls. Mom, Dad and four daughters. I want to go back to Canada and camp but DW won't even talk about it after our two hour interrogation walking into Canada. If you walk across at Niagara falls make sure you have some change to pay you toll at the Canada end of the bridge.

I suspect passports would be a must but I don't THINK you actually NEED to have kids with you

What has changed this year is the US is asking for proof of citizenship. That doesn't sound like there are exceptions for kids.

HUH, Canada is it's own country we have our limitations on whom we admit. Of course, Canadian Border guards will be checking.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

There is no "grief" involved when you have the documents you are supposed to have. For BOTH the US and Canada crossings, you need proof of citizenship (Birth certificate will do) and government-issued photo ID (drivers license). A passport satisfies BOTH these requirements. In the case of children who most likely do not have photo ID, as long as they have the same name, you'll be fine.
