We spent a month in Mexico and never had a problem with the Pemex stations. We had a routine of stopping before the pump would reach the filler cap. my wife would get out to check to see the pump was cleared and then I would move into position to fill. We always paid in pesos and paid exact amounts so we never had to calculate for change.

Gee....I guess I should have put a couple of smiley faces in my post.

It was supposed to be "tongue in cheek" comment; I wasn't trying to start a US-Canada war. Most Canadians seem to delight in their "backwoods" reputation. And Oregon's laws are infamous throughout the Great NW. I guess some aren't quite so enamored with the stereotypes.

I spent 6 months touring Canada, and I was never asked for my ZIP. But I did (and do) run into the XX dollar limit on my card in both countries. So I also usually take the hike into the store.

As to who is responsible for the zip code snafu, the CC verification company is the one that requires the zip code, it's an option that can be activated by either the oil company or, in the case of the privately owned stations, the station owner. Thre are also different program triggers for when the software is activated.

But it is only available in certain areas and sometimes depends on how the station communicates with the card verification company. There is an extra charge for the service.

The software glitch on Zip Codes is not directly the responsibility of the CC company nor the oil companies. It is the company that provide the CC verification services. One of these is based in Phoenix and one of it's geeks is an acquaintance of mine. And I think all of them use the same software, which was developed in the US. Which is probably why they don't understand Canadian Zip Codes, or any other non-US zips.

From Canada, back to Mexico...

Last time I was down (flew to my home in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nayarit), I was running late and had to top off my rental car before I returned it to catch my flight back. I only needed about 1/4 of a tank. When I went to pay I realized I was out of pesos, so gave the attendant $50.00 US (all the US money I had left). When he gave me the change I stuffed it in my wallet without checking it. I've gotten gas at that station countless times with never a problem. When I arrived home, I realized that he had given me a 20 peso bill! So, for a quarter of a tank I paid roughly $48.00 US!

The station was the Pemex in La Cruz.

My fault, I should never take anything for granted, no matter how much of a hurry I'm in. I also should have reported it, but was so quickly drawn back in to the SOS of working, etc., that I never got around to it.

I've made a promise to myself to do better next time!

No offense here. Just pointing out how far off track the thread has gotten.

BTW, do Canadian stations recognise US ZIP's? My trips NOB haven't been long enough to require fueling.

That would be our point. Canadian stations DON'T ASK FOR THE ZIP. Some US stations do.

As a Canadian I get as frustrated as every other Canuck when using pumps that ask for Zip codes. I changed the address of one of my credit cards to a USA address with a real Zip code. I called both Pilot ( the worst offender) and a USA credit card company. Supposedly pump fruad costs them 100's of millions of US$ a year. I guess we dont have that problem in Canada. Maybe we are just more honest!!! But this is no more frustrating than trying to return something to a non big box store and their computer will not accept Canadian postal codes. I usually make one up. Yup, Yankee Corps. can be narrow minded and never think that there are other people in this world!!

This may be a dumb question, but can the attendant who swipes the card for you inside the gas bar (without checking the zip code) assure that the card is not a fraud? I thought that that the swipe card reader inside is as "dumb" as the one outside!

Supposedly, the attendant can check the signature on the back of the card with the one you sign. In reality, many times they don't even look. I don't have a signature on my cards. Instead, I mine say "See ID." Over half the time, I'm not asked to show an ID.
